PhillyNow Calendar: Civic Events, March 11-15 – PW

The city recently promised it’d be holding a series of town halls to better explain the new Actual Value Initiative (AVI), and it’s totally happening all week. Monday, March 11

City Council. The Committee on Labor and Civil Service will hold a public hearing with regard to terms imposed on AFSCME Local 2186, District Council 47.

Safety Committee Meeting. The South of South Neighborhood Association will hold its Safety Committee meeting, which will “plan the group’s activities to improve safety throughout our community”—things like walkability partnerships, TownWatch and police officer appreciation.

Tuesday, March 12

AVI Town Hall. Representatives from the Office of Property Assessment will meet South Philly residents to answer questions about the new Actual Value Initiative.

Migrating Wives: Negotiating Identities in a New Land. A panel of scholars will discuss the “changing patterns of immigrant wives’ experiences”—which will include topics of polygamy, marriage and the mail-order bride industry. The panel is organized by the lobal Centers at the University of Pennsylvania and the United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia.

Board Meeting. The Logan Square Neighborhood Association will hold their board meeting.
7pm. Free Library Central Branch. 1901 Vine St.

Membership Committee Meeting. The Northern Liberties Neighborhood Association’ Liberty Lands Committee will meet.
8pm. NLNA Office. 3rd and Fairmount. NLNA.org.

AVI Public Meeting. The South of South Neighborhood Association will hold a public meeting about the city’s new Actual Value Initiative.

Wednesday, March 13

City Council. The Committee on Rules will hold a public hearing regarding Roxborough District. Specifically, continuing the designation of the Roxborough Development Corporation as the Neighborhood Improvement District Managing Association for the district, as well as discussion of a list of proposed improvements within the area.

City Council. The Committee on Labor and Civil Service will hold a public hearing with regard to expanding and modifying the definition of “Life Partnership,” providing further protections, tax credits and health care benefits to life partners in Philadelphia.

Campus Philly’s Sustainability Event. Campus Philly will gather students and “leaders” for a talk on sustainability on college campuses. The event is in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and Herman Miller.

Zoning Meeting. The East Kensington Neighborhood Association will hold a zoning meeting. Circle of Hope Church.

Planning and Design Committee Meeting. The Logan Square Neighborhood Association will hold a planning and design committee meeting.

AVI Technical Assistance. Representatives from the Office of Property Assessments and the Dept. of Revenue will meet with neighbors in South Philly to discuss tax relief, first-level review of AVI and the new property assessments.

AVI Meeting. West Philadelphia residents will be able to ask questions concerning AVI.

Thursday, March 14

Economic Development. The SOSNA Economic Development team will meet to look at stimulating economic growth, including marketing, vacant spaces and other initiatives.
