Past the Post

MOST of the attention at Thoroughbred Park on Sunday will be focused on the four listed events of the eight-race card, but this year’s Camarena Quality Handicap has also attracted a strong field.

The strength of the field in the Biretta Busby Hatmaker Co. Camarena Quality Handicap (1000m) can be largely attributed to a rise in total prizemoney.

The corresponding race last year offered $30,000, while this year the field will fight over a pool of $50,000 in prizemoney.

Girls Go Racing, from the Gregory Hickman stable, will shoot for her third straight victory in the Camarena Quality.

A healthy contingent of Canberra gallopers will be out to stop the Sydney-based Marechal mare from continuing her stranglehold over the 1000-metre race.

However, the wide draw for Girls Go Racing may already have her beat.

The widest gate the six-year-old has won from in her 43-start career to date is barrier seven, and barring a flurry of late scratchings, she will likely jump from no better than barrier 10 on Sunday.

In fact, Girls Go Racing’s past two wins in the Camarena came from barriers three and four.

Despite the unfavourable draw for Sunday’s race, Hickman is confident the mare will be fighting out the finish of the Camarena once again.

“She hasn’t won for a while, but her runs lately have been good,” Hickman said. “She’ll be coming down to Canberra as good as she’s ever done.”

The best chance of a Canberra-based winner this year seems to be from the Matt Dale stable with stakes-winning five-year-old, Unanimously contesting the $50,000 sprint. The Not A Single Doubt gelding, who won the listed Canterbury Classic last year, will race on his home track for the first time since he contested the listed Black Opal Stakes in 2010 when he finished ninth to Decision Time.

Jumping from the widest alley on Sunday will make it tough for Unanimously third-up, however, it is hard to dismiss him as a genuine winning threat following his respectable last-start fifth in the group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m).

Another local contender is Bernie Howlett’s Party Dress, who has won four times on the course proper at Canberra over 1000 metres.

Keith Dryden will also saddle up a runner in the Camarena, the fast-finishing Vilakazi Street. The second emergency, the Barbara Joseph- and Paul Jones-trained Gorgeous Amelia, may also take a place in the field.

At a race distance of 1000m, the Camarena Quality Handicap is the shortest race in Sunday’s Kamberra Wine Company Black Opal Stakes Race Day.
