NMH putting golf course, other properties up for sale

NORTHFIELD — More of Northfield is now in flux.

Northfield Mount Hermon Chief Financial Officer Richard Wood has announced to some the school intends to list for sale four of its remaining Northfield properties, including the golf course and pool.

Selectboard chairman Kathleen Wright said Wood informed her of the planned sale Friday.

Wright said this opens up further dimensions for possible changes to the town.

To be listed for sale are the properties known as The Homestead, on Main Street near the main campus entrance; Green Pastures, at the corner of Main and Moody streets; the golf course including the pool, four houses and some adjacent land; and 22-23 acres of vacant land on Mill Street.

Cheri Cross, NMH Director of Communications, confirmed the list of properties to go on sale later this week.

“The schools board of trustees determined that these properties are not central to the school’s educational program,” Cross said.

According to a map of the old campus on the NMH website, The Homestead and Green Pastures are buildings with some associated land.

The private school sold the core of its Northfield campus in 2009 as it consolidated to a single campus in Gill. The property has since sat in limbo under Hobby Lobby and its owners the Green family, and now the National Christian Foundation.

Announcing a $10-million dollar gift from an alum last month, School head Peter Fayroian said the money would help to complete the transition from the Northfield campus, helping fund construction of housing for the dozen or so school employees remaining on the old campus.

The original sale included 217 of NMH’s 2,184 acres in Northfield. Cross said the new sale totals 181 acres with the majority of the remainder forest land tied into the school’s endowment.
