UPDATE: How the gasometer skeleton will frame the entertainment precinct at Newstead.

THE iconic gasometer frame at Newstead is expected to become a major attraction within months as developer FKP puts the finishing touches on the second stage of its $1.1 billion development.
While the gasworks played an integral role in generating lighting for Brisbane from the late 1800s, it seems fitting that the historic frame will become the star in its own programmed music and light show.
FKP has been negotiating with Brisbane City Council for the show to run each Friday and Saturday night at 7pm, lasting for about 20 minutes.
The frame will also be floodlit every night until about 11pm.
To be known as Gasworks Plaza, the integrated space would be the setting for public events and festivals.

FKP development director Mark Jewell said the heritage-listed framework would remain the “hero” of the public plaza, towering above lawn and landscaped areas.
“What we really wanted to create was an entertainment precinct, to do something special for Brisbane,” Mr Jewell said. “We’d like it to be an informal area for the community and up-and-coming entertainers.”
The 4000sq m space within the frame was designed as a central stage for the restaurants and cafes to be situated around the perimeter.
Stage three of the development, also under construction, consists of a 13-level office tower.
Mr Jewell said FKP was now negotiating with two other major tenants, both of whom were interested in taking the rest of the space.
The Gasworks masterplan will be completed over 10 years with the community eventually housing about 750 apartments.
