JAZZ FACULTY PERFORMS ON GRAMMY-WINNING ALBUM

Ron Stout, jazz faculty member of Saddleback College’s Division of Fine Arts and Media Technology, played the trumpet on a Grammy-winning album at this year’s Grammy Awards. “¡Ritmo!” by The Clare Fischer Latin Jazz Big Band took the honors for Best Latin Jazz Album. Fischer, who died last year, received the award posthumously. Stout, who teaches jazz trumpet and jazz combos, has been nominated 12 times over the years and won two times. The first was with Bob Florence Limited Big Band for the album “Serendipity 18.”

Stout has toured and recorded with Woody Herman, Bill Holman, Joey Sellers Jazz Aggregation, Bob Florence, Horace Silver, Pepper Adams and Supersax. He also plays with the Dizzy Gillespie Memorial Big Band out of New York when the band is in the area. During Stout’s seven years with the Woody Herman Orchestra, he was back up and contributed solo work behind Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Nancy Wilson, Diane Schuur, Anita O’Day, and Mel Tormé.

Stout recently released his second album under his name, the Ron Stout Quintet, called “Metamorpheus.” The album also features Saddleback College faculty member Gerald Pinter. Stout released his first album “Chet and other Heroes” in 2005.

VOTE FOR THE ‘ULTIMATE LOVE STORY’

Catherine Maloof, a chiropractor who has served Mission Viejo for 25 years, has been selected as a finalist in the international “Ultimate Love Story” contest, sponsored by the Namale Resort in Fiji.

The finalists’ stories can be viewed and voted on at http://www.namalefiji.com/sweepstakes/.

Maloof’s is the first story listed, entitled “True Love Waits,” with the picture of her and her husband in front of the Eiffel Tower.

The winner is chosen by the most votes. The deadline for voting is midnight Thursday. The winner receives airfare to Fiji from Los Angeles and a five-night stay.

MISSION VIEJO GIRL COMPETES FOR MISS JR. TEEN LA/ANAHEIM TITLE

JoHanna McClure of Mission Viejo will compete in the 2013 Miss Jr. Teen LA/Anaheim pageant competition on Sunday. If she wins, she will represent LA/Anaheim and surrounding communities at the national competition in Orlando, Fla., where more than $30,000.00 will be awarded in prizes.

‘TEEN-LIT QUEEN’ VISITS MISSION VIEJO

New York Times bestselling author Lauren Oliver will appear at 3 p.m. on March 10 at the Mission Viejo Library, 100 Civic Center, to discuss “Requiem,” the epic finale her “Delirium” trilogy, as part of the city’s Writers Present program.

The trilogy is a series for teens set in a world where love is deemed illegal and can be eradicated with a special procedure. The first two installments – “Delirium” and “Pandemonium” – were back-to-back worldwide bestsellers.

CASSANDRA CLARE VISITS MISSION VIEJO

Cassandra Clare, New York Times bestselling author of urban fantasy novels, will appear at 6 p.m. on March 22 in the Mission Viejo City Council Chamber, 200 Civic Center, to discuss the final book in her fantasy trilogy, “Clockwork Princess.” Tickets are $21.50, including a signed hardcover copy of the new book.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING

Mission Viejo is accepting registration for its American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course. There will be three 3-day sessions held on March 22-24, April 19-21 and May 17-19 at the Montanoso Recreation Center. Participants, who must be at least 15 years old, will receive certification in lifeguard training, first aid, automated external defibrilators and CPR, which is good for two years.

VENDORS, VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ARTS ALIVE

Arts and crafts vendors and volunteers are needed for Mission Viejo’s Arts Alive Festival May 4-5 at Oso Viejo Community Park on the Village Green and the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way. During the two-day festival, street painters will transform the pavement into a gallery of chalk artwork.

This year’s festival celebrates the 1960s with live entertainment and cultural, artistic and environmental activities. There will be ceramics, drawing, painting, and sculpture. The Mission Viejo Friends of the Arts will host a beer and wine garden; food will be available for purchase.
