Area agricultural events for the week of Feb. 24, 2013

· Manure Management Meeting and Workshop, sponsored by the York County Conservation District, is for owners of livestock, poultry or horses and for those who import manure to spread on crop fields.

An information meeting to discuss manure management, conservation plans and what landowners must know to be in compliance with the state laws will be 7 p.m. Tuesday.

A manure management plan development workshop will be 7 p.m. March 12. A manure management plan must be developed by any owner of livestock, poultry or horses. Plans also must be developed by anyone who spreads manure on their crop fields.

Both events will be at the York County Annex Building, Room 1, 118 Pleasant Acres Road, Springettsbury Township. Events are free, but registration is required for the March workshop. To register, call Penn State Cooperative Extension at 717-840-7408.

· PA Garden Show of York, with the theme “Nature’s Symphony,” will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 3 at York Expo Center, Toyota Arena, 334 Carlisle Ave., West Manchester Township. Featured will be 11 walk-through landscape display gardens, shop for just about anything from lawn tractors to unusual flowering plants in the Garden market and the Federated Garden Clubs of District IV will stage a standard flower show titled “Rhapsody in Springtime.”

· The 27th annual York County Agricultural Recognition Banquet, hosted by the York County Agriculture Business Council, will be March 21 at York Expo Center, Old Main Hall, 334 Carlisle Ave., West Manchester Township. Social begins at 5:45 p.m.; dinner at 6:30 p.m. and program at 7:30 p.m. The keynote speaker will be Rhett Laubach presenting “Legacy In Agriculture.” Cost is $32 per person. · Donations Needed to Support Agricultural Education Efforts The York County Agriculture Business Council is seeking donations for the 27th Annual York County Agricultural Recognition Banquet to be held March 21 at York Expo Center. By spotlighting York County businesses and products through a silent auction, the Council’s goal is to raise funds to support programs focused on educating the community about the importance of agriculture to York County’s economy and way of life. Businesses or individuals could donate items from surplus inventory, promotional items or gift cards. Donors will be recognized in the printed program and slide presentation. · The Capital Area Therapeutic Riding Association, a working horse farm and home to a number of other animals including goats, dogs, cats, rabbits, chickens and alpaca in Grantville, Dauphin County, is looking for volunteers. Volunteer positions include therapeutic riding assistants, barn managers, maintenance workers, animal caretakers and gardeners. CATRA’s volunteer orientation will be 1 p.m. Saturday and March 3. The 90-minute program will introduce the concepts and benefits of therapeutic riding. Attendees will be informed about volunteer opportunities at the organization. · GardenWise, an educational program of speakers and workshops for home and community gardeners and individuals interested in horticulture and native plants, will be 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. March 9 at the York County School of Technology, 2179 S. Queen St., York Township. Registration is $60 and includes a box lunch. Briefly noted

· Beaver Creek Angus, Jackson Township, was recognized nationally by the American Angus Association for having one registered Angus cow included in the Association’s 2013 Pathfinder Report. The Pathfinder program identifies superior Angus cows based upon recorded performance traits economically important to efficient beef production.

· The York County Buy Fresh Buy Local Chapter is in the process of publishing the second “Local Food Guide.” All local food providers can submit information for the free listing. The “Local Food Guide” will list food providers by categories such as: Farmer/Grower, Meat/Poultry, Grocers/Retailers, Farmer Market/Roadside Stand, Dairy/Creameries, Restaurants/Caterers, Community Supported Agriculture, Bakery, Wineries/Breweries, Nurseries, Food Processors and others. The goal of this guide is to connect consumers to local food providers.

· White Rose 4-H Horse and Pony Club meets 7 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Springfield Township Building, 9211 Susquehanna Trail South, Seven Valleys. 4-H horse clubs provide educational opportunities but do not provide horses or riding lessons. · Airville Hitchin’ Rail 4-H Horse Club meets 7 p.m. the second Tuesday of every month at Muddy Creek Meadows Riding Stable, 699 Frosty Hill Road, Delta. Youth need to bring a notebook and a pen or pencil. 4-H horse clubs provide educational opportunities but do not provide horses or riding lessons. This and all 4-H programs are available for anyone 8 to 18 years old as of Jan. 1 of the current year, regardless of ancestry, color, disability or handicap, national origin, race, religious creed, sex, sexual orientation or place of residence.
