CAL BACK IN ACTION AT JOHN A. BURNS INTERCOLLEGIATE
After opening its 2013 spring season with a third-place showing January 28-29 at the Arizona Intercollegiate, the top-ranked Golden Bears return to competitive action for the first time in three weeks at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by Hawai’i this Wednesday-Friday, February 20-22. The 54-hole event will take place at the 7,218-yard, par-72 Arnold Palmer Course at Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore of O’ahu in Kahuku, Hawaii. Each of the event’s 15 teams will play 18 holes each day beginning at 9:30 a.m. PT/7:30 a.m. HT. The teams will tee off from the first and 10th holes during each of the first two rounds Wednesday and Thursday. Friday’s action will be a shotgun start. Follow the John A. NO. 1 CAL LOOKING FOR RECORD AND LANDMARK WIN
Cal won each of its five in the fall of 2012 and remains one win from tying a school record with its sixth win of the season. The Bears are also one win away from giving head coach Steve Desimone his 50th career victory.
CAL LOOKING TO MAKE IT THREE IN A ROW AT JOHN A. BURNS INTERCOLLEGIATE
Cal is the two-time defending champion of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate after victories in 2011 and 2012, while Max Homa finished second last year after sharing individual medalist honors with two others in 2011 before falling on the second playoff hole. Last season the Bears led the event at the end of each of the three days of action on their way to a seven-shot victory. Homa’s second-place finish led the way, while Joël Stalter tied for third. Brandon Hagy (T11th), Pace Johnson (T18th) and Michael Kim (T35th) also participated. Homa’s performance led the way to Cal’s six-stroke victory in 2011, while Eric Mina (T6th), Stephen Hale (T8th) and Ben An (T8th) also placed in the top 10. Michael Weaver tied for 35th. No player in the 2013 Cal lineup played in the event prior to 2011, although current team member Brandon Hagy (not in 2013 lineup) tied for ninth on a Cal team that tied for third in the 2010 John A. Burns Intercollegiate. Prior to Homa’s win in 2011, the previous Cal player to capture the event was Hale in 2008. Cal did not play in the tournament in 2009.

Cal is one of the three squads in the 15-team field with a top-25 national ranking. The Golden Bears are the unanimous No. 1 team in the Golfstat, Golfweek and GolfWorld/NIKE Coaches polls. New Mexico ranks as high as No. 4 according to Golfweek, is at No. 5 on Golfstat’s list and No. 6 by the Golf World NIKE Coaches Poll. Texas AM checks in with a No. 25 ranking from Golfweek. The remainder of the field includes Arizona, BYU, BYU-Hawai’i, Colorado State, Denver, Hawai’i, Hawai’i- Hilo, Nevada, UTEP, Utah, UNLV and Washington State.
2013 JOHN A. BURNS INTERCOLLEGIATE WEATHER FORECAST
The temperatures for the 2013 John A. Burns Intercollegiate are pleasantly warm with all lows and highs ranging between 70 and 80 degrees during the three days of the tournament. However, both wind and rain are in the forecast with a 50 percent chance of rain both Wednesday and Friday sandwiching Thursday’s 60 percent chance. Winds are out of the ENE up to 15 miles per hour on Wednesday, as well as 14 mph Thursday and Friday.

BIG FALL SEASON FOR THE BEARS
Cal won all five of its fall events for the first time ever and is already only one shy of equaling the school record of six victories set by the 2011-12 team. The Bears won the Gopher Invitational, before sharing the crown at the PING/Golfweek Preview with host Georgia Tech and then winning the inaugural Pac-12 Preview, the Alister MacKenzie Invitational and the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational. Cal opened the spring by taking third at the Arizona Intercollegiate.
PICKING UP WHERE THEY LEFT OFF LAST YEAR
With five victories in six events to open the 2012-13 campaign, Cal has now won an astonishing 11 of its last 20 events and finished in the top five in all of them dating back through the entire 2011-12 season when Cal tied for third at the 2012 NCAA Championship for its second-highest finish ever to the team’s lone national title in 2004. The 2011-12 season was one of firsts for Cal, including its first trip to match play at the NCAA Championship as well as its first NCAA match play victory in the quarterfinals over San Diego State. Cal also captured its first NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles, posted a school-record six wins to double its previous mark and had top-five finishes in all 14 events for the first time in school history.
KIM RANKED NO. 1 IN THE NATION
Michael Kim moved into his current top spot on Golfweek’s national rankings for the first time in his career on February 4, 2013, becoming only the second Cal player to ever be ranked No. 1 nationally as well as the second in 2012-13. Max Homa was the nation’s top-ranked player in late September and early October of 2012 after tying for second in each of his first two events of the season at the Gopher Invitational and PING/Golfweek Preview. Kim has finished in the top 10 in each of his six tournaments this season. In addition to his outright win at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational and sharing the Arizona Intercollegiate win with teammate Joël Stalter, Kim tied for second at the Gopher Invitational, tied for fifth at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, tied for sixth at the Pac-12 Preview and tied for 10th at the PING/Golfweek Preview. He leads the team with a 69.72 scoring average that is the second-best in the country for those eligible and fifth overall.

Cal has five of the nation’s top 60 ranked players in both the Golfstat and GolfWeek listings in Michael Kim (No. 1 Golfweek/No. 1 Golfstat), Joël Stalter (No. 10 Golfstat/No. 11 Golfweek), Max Homa (No. 47 Golfweek/No. 49 Golfstat), Michael Weaver (No. 48 Golfweek/No. 54 Golfstat) and Brandon Hagy (No. 54 Golfweek/No. 60 Golfstat).

2012-13 INDIVIDUAL VICTORIES
Back-to-back individual victories by Michael Kim (Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, Arizona Intercollegiate) for his first two collegiate wins have highlighted Cal’s individual performances in 2012-13. Brandon Hagy and Joël Stalter have also both won for the first time as collegiate players, with Hagy taking the Alister MacKenzie Invitational hosted by Cal in the fall, while Stalter shared the win with Kim at the Arizona Intercollegiate with no playoff taking place.
18 TOP-10 FINISHES
Michael Kim’s six top-10 finishes lead the Golden Bears but four others have finished in the top 10 on three occasions each to give Cal individuals a total of 18 top-10 finishes in 2012-13. In addition to his Alister MacKenzie Invitational win, Brandon Hagy took fourth at the Gopher Invitational and tied for ninth at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational. Max Homa tied for second at both the Gopher Invitational and PING/Golfweek Preview, while tying for seventh at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. Joël Stalter has complimented his victory along with Kim at the Arizona Intercollegiate by tying for third at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational as well as tying for eighth at the Pac-12 Preview. Michael Weaver tied for second at the PING/Golfweek Preview, was fourth at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational and tied for ninth at the Gopher Invitational.
CAL AND KIM AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS
Cal leads the nation as of February 19, 2013, in six of 14 team categories complied by Golfstat, including average score (71.39), versus par (+0.06), par-three scoring (3.09), birdies (313, co-leader), subpar strokes/round (3.72) and short game percentage (59.2%). Michael Kim is the team’s only individual leader, sharing the nation’s top spot in short game percentage (72.9%). JAMES YOON TO MAKE COLLEGIATE DEBUT
James Yoon will be in the lineup for the first time in his collegiate career at the 2013 John A. Burns Intercollegiate playing in the the No. 3 spot. Yoon earned the spot during the team’s qualifying, which included a course-record 62 at the San Francisco Golf Club.
FIVE AMONG PALMER CUP RANKINGS
Cal has five players currently listed in the 2013 Palmer Cup rankings with Michael Kim leading the way in the top spot for Team USA (.9984), which also features from Cal No. 8 Michael Weaver (.9842), No. 14 Max Homa (.9709) and No. 16 Brandon Hagy (.9709). Joël Stalter is No. 10 for Team Europe. The 2013 Palmer Cup featuring the top collegians from the United States and Europe will be played June 7-9 at Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware.
WEAVER INVITED TO 2013 MASTERS AND U.S. OPEN
Michael Weaver has an invitation to play in 2013 to play both the Masters (April 11-14) and U.S. Open (June 13-16) due to his runner-up finish at the 2012 U.S. Amateur.

“For whatever reason the golf course has set up well for us the last couple of years. Max Homa has played it really, really well. Joël Stalter tied for third there a year ago. It fits our games well. It’s a big golf course. Guys that pound the ball usually have a pretty good track record at Turtle Bay. It’s a fun course and all in all it’s a good test.”
On the team’s opportunity for an unbeaten season coming to an end
“Obviously we were disappointed that we didn’t keep it going and especially in the way it transpired. Normally we play the par fives really, really well but for once they pounded us. The chances for us to bounce back at Turtle Bay are really good. We seem to certainly be playing better than we were playing before we headed to Tucson. It’s good for us to get back into competition. It will be a good test for us.”
On James Yoon’s making his collegiate debut
“James has played really well since we’ve returned from the holidays. James won the qualifying with the keep people going away, including a course-record 62 at the San Francisco Golf Club. James right now is playing great. He has been a different player since we’ve returned from the holidays. He’s really earned this. He’s played great and definitely moved into the top five. All in all, it’s probably a good thing. A little competition in the lineup is a good thing.”
