Black History Month is being celebrated with events around the region. Here are a few that are open to the public:

• 3rd Annual African-American Heritage Celebration to examine the condition of black families that emerged from slavery and family conditions today. Soldiers Sailors Memorial Hall, Oakland. Feb. 16, 1 to 3 p.m.

• The Rachel Randall Education Department of Pentacostal Temple, youth rally and presentation by the Wilberforce University Gospel Choir, Feb. 16, 3 p.m., and the California University of Pennsylvania Gospel Choir and the August Wilson Dance Group, Feb. 17, 6 p.m. Pentacostal Temple Church of God in Christ, 6300 E. • Poet, artist and activist Vanessa German talks about her project, “Love Front Porch.” Kresge Theatre at Carlow University, Oakland. Feb. 20, 4 to 6 p.m.

• Demaskus Theater Collective presents readings from historical plays and a blues revue celebrating African-American culture. Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh branches, Feb. 22-24.
