THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) is now set to include the names of 123 party-list groups, including those that sought temporary reprieve from the Supreme Court (SC), in the official ballots to be printed for the May 13 polls.
According to Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes, they are left with no choice but to push through with the printing of the ballots and include all those that secured status quo ante orders (SQAOs) from the SC.
Earlier, the Comelec said it will wait as long as it can on the final ruling of the SC on the disqualification of 52 party-list groups from running in the elections before pushing through with the printing of the ballots.
To recall, 39 previously registered party-list groups and 13 new applicants have managed to secure status quo ante orders from the SC against the Comelec decisions.
This has resulted in the inclusion of the 39 groups with cancelled registration in the raffle, along with the 84 groups already accredited by the Comelec, in the raffle for the placing in the ballots.
The 13 new applicants denied by the Comelec were required to secure mandatory injunctions, thus making them unqualified to join the raffle.
Brillantes said the printing is already scheduled to begin on February 4 for the more than 52 million official ballots for the midterm elections.
He said they expect the printing to run for a period of about 50 days since the capacity of the printers is about a million ballots per day.
He also said they will print an exact number of ballots to that of the official number of registered voters of about 52,014,000.
Earlier, the National Printing Office had already awarded the P780-million contract to supply and print the official ballots to Holy Family Printing Corp. and its partner, Canon Marketing Philippines. (HDT/Sunnex)
