One of Wharfedale’s historic buildings and the site of a former pub has been sold to make way for a housing development.
The former Malt Shovel village pub, in Main Street, Burley-in-Wharfedale, owned by Punch Taverns, has been sold to Yorparks Ltd Square Feet Residential and Commercial Property Developments for an undisclosed sum.
The sale will now allow a new residential development of nine homes to be built.
The pub will be turned into houses and five more will be built beside the building, which dates back to the 1880s, and is Grade-II listed.
It has housed several restaurants and pub businesses during the past decade and it still contains many of its original features.
It most recently traded as the bar and restaurant The Malt Shovel, which closed about 18 months ago.
The building stands close to St Mary’s Parish Church and other historic village buildings within a conservation area.
Clair McGowan, senior surveyor at CBRE’s Leeds office stated: “Businesses at The Malt Shovel had repeatedly proved unsuccessful and the premises eventually closed 18 months ago.
“The purchaser recognised the quality of the location along with the attractive building and the redevelopment will breathe life back into a redundant site.”
Planning permission has been granted by Bradford City Council for a sympathetic scheme for four townhouses from the existing building and five new houses which will be developed on the former car park.
CBRE Group is the world’s largest commercial estate agent service firm and its main offices are based in Los Angeles.
Council planning officers have attached conditions to the permission relating to construction, drainage and building materials.
Officers also said works affecting the original Malt Shovel property should be carried out in accordance with a wildlife survey.
The developer is required to implement measures to enhance habitat at the site for bats prior to occupation of the homes.
