Since the first
episode was screened in 2010, Downton Abbey
has rapidly become a global televisual phenomenon which has put its filming location, the tiny Oxfordshire village of Bampton, firmly on the map.
Surprisingly, house prices have yet to go through the roof and a three-bedroom cottage in the village where residents star as extras in the show and mingle openly with the cast, can still be snapped up for £300,000. Although this is expected to change once the Christmas Special and fourth series get underway.
Already the village of Highclere, on the Hampshire Berkshire borders where the first series was filmed, has felt the effects of the international television exposure.

Michelle Dockery) married her cousin Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens)
Downton Abbey’s outdoor shots are mostly filmed in Bampton, a village in Oxfordshire, England, located in the Thames Valley about 4.5 miles (7.2 km) southwest of Witney
Stephen Wolfenden, director for Oxfordshire at County Homesearch, said: ‘I know of a couple from California who got jobs in West Berkshire and wanted to live as close to Highclere as possible just because they fell in love with the programme in California.
‘Now apparently all their friends can’t wait to come and visit.
‘Bampton will also see the benefits of this exposure. It won’t be instant, but in the medium to long term it could well become a good place to invest in property.
‘At the moment it has been effected more by tourism but as this develops and the fourth series takes off, things will change.
‘And of course, as prices in the nearby Cotswolds continue to go up, villages nearby like Bampton will also rise.’

Bampton was singled out as the ideal location for Downton, thanks to its proximity to London and the fact it is so well-preserved.
The show’s
producer
Nigel Marchant once said in the local press: ‘Bampton is perfect because
it is so well preserved, and you hardly need to do anything in terms of
alterations.

Cottage on the market for £495,000 in order to downsize now that their
children from previous marriages have left home. They have no intention
of leaving the village which they say has a ‘great community spirit.’

Further shopping facilities are available in the nearby market towns of Burford and Witney whilst
Oxford provides the main shopping and cultural centres for the area.

Who wants to live with the villagers, it’s much so nicer at Highclere Castle.

I would get very very depressed in these shabby, sad little cramped homes in a country with notoriously terrible weather….so depressing. – Leah Lawson, Beverly Hills, United States, 25/12/2012 7:51
Why don’t you sort out your sick society before you go laying into other people.

What a load of rubbish – Bampton is a tiny village of no great appeal very near to a massive RAF base with the noise of planes all the time – not particularly ‘rural’ either with major towns a few miles away; the Downton Abbey crew can stay in the various over priced hotels in the area and mingle with the London set who come down for the weekends and who have already out-priced all the locals in buying up anything decent at huge over prices. The Cotswolds are no longer rural or pretty.

– Leah Lawson , Beverly Hills, United States, 25/12/2012 07:51 ================= you must be one of these plastic people living in a plastic world that we read about. No class, no taste, no history- not much of anything really…. so depressing for you .

– Leah Lawson, Beverly Hills, United States, 25/12/2012 7:51That’s OK, we’ll keep our “shabby, sad little cramped homes” (aka beautifully preserved, original and characterful architectural gems which showcase many centuries of our rich history) and you can have your Hollywood bling palaces (aka ostentatious, vulgar and built on a scale commensurate with the inhabitants’ egos). The crucial difference being TASTE. Merry Christmas!

“Bampton is a village and civil parish in Oxfordshire, England”
That was fun, being from Texas I had to look up what is a “civil parish”. I learn something new everyday. Thanks Mail.
