PASCAGOULA — Pascagoula’s Wal-Mart Supercenter is listed as one of other Walmart locations across the nation going on strike on Black Friday on the Corporate Action Network website.
However, a manager of the store on Denny Avenue denied there being a strike is scheduled to take place and said, “We’re not going anywhere.”
The Associated Press reported that federal labor officials will decide quickly whether to support a request by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to stop a union-backed group from organizing worker walk-outs at hundreds of stores on Friday.
The retailer filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board on Friday against the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union. The NLRB said it will try to act on the complaint within 72 hours.
Other local Wal-Mart locations are listed on the site with a banner stating, “This event needs a leader!” with a time of strike listed as “TBD.” The Pascagoula location, however, does not have this banner and includes a listed time for a strike scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, indicating that someone apparently got on the site and organized the store’s participation.
Under the event details it states, “Stand with Walmart workers in their fight for their rights. For decades, Walmart Stores, Inc. have dragged down wages, forcing their workers to work irregular schedules, and intimidated and took retribution on any workers who fought back. It’s time for the retribution to end, so come to this local Walmart to show your solidarity and tell Walmart that they need to pay their fair share.”
The campaign is organized under Can Action Center whose purpose is “supporting, empowering and connecting activists leading the fight against corporate abuse.”
Wal-Mart workers at 1,000 locations across the nation said they’re angry about the store’s early opening on Thanksgiving night for Black Friday and plan to strike, according to ABC News. The Wal-Mart website states there are currently 3,153 supercenter locations in the U.S.
