Peterborough United captain Gabriel Zakuani has hit back at the club after he and three team-mates were fined and transfer listed for going out following the club’s 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Earlier on Monday the Championship club revealed that Zakuani, Tyrone Barnett, Emile Sinclair and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing had breached club discipline and added that they would not comment further on the issue.

But Zakuani revealed the reasons for the club’s actions when defending his behaviour on Twitter after hearing the news, while chairman Darragh MacAnthony also took to the social networking site to support manager Darren Ferguson – who he revealed was the man to make the decision.

On your way: Club captain Gabriel Zakuani has been fined and placed on the transfer list

On your way: Nathaniel Mendez Laing had been put up for sale too

In a series of tweets former Fulham
and Leyton Orient defender Zakuani, 26, posted: ‘I went out on a weekend
where there’s no midweek game, those that know me know I don’t drink or
smoke, I was up at 8am for church next day.

‘Honestly at the time I didn’t feel I
did anything wrong as I was home around 2am, I wasn’t arrested, no
fighting or anti social behaviour.

‘I understand the club are not happy
as we are at the wrong end of the table and I have nothing but total
respect for the gaffa and staff.

‘I’m hurt its come to this as we have
made a lot of history in the past 5 seasons and I love the club to
bits, sorry to all my fans.’

MacAnthony later on Monday night
tweeted: ‘Just back from trip arrived in my office to mountains of
tweets..A lot of them full of abuse anger aimed at me. Now I
really am baffled.

‘The Club has made a statement as you all know I am fully behind the Gaffer on his course of action today.

You too: Tyrone Barnett was also involved

You too: Emile Sinclair was also implemented in the breach of club discipline

You too: Tyrone Barnett (left) and Emile Sinclair (right) were also involved, but the club would not elaborate further

‘I give blood sweat tears for
the Posh invest no matter what. Personally have helped players out
many times through tough times so when our clubs back is to the
wall, have been well beaten at home again, I need my lads to show some
common sense, humility, class stay – focused on battle in hand. If
they can’t be trusted to do that, then Posh will be stronger without
them going forward. Harsh but true!’

The Posh, who sit in the Championship
relegation zone, seem prepared to settle for a loss on the record
£1million they spent on striker Barnett this summer.

Since joining from Crawley in May, the 27-year-old has made 10 appearances for the Posh, scoring only once.

Zakuani, meanwhile, has played 160 games since joining the club from Fulham in 2009.

Not one of the players started
Saturday’s home defeat to Crystal Palace, although Barnett did come off
the bench in the second half, having little impact.
