A list of 13 South Dakota clinics was released on Thursday, all known to have used products from the New England Compound Center that produced fungus-contaminated injections that lead to the national meningitis outbreak.
Two of those clinics are in Dakota Dunes.
The list of clinics is precautionary, extremely precautionary, but it’s made to help you.
All products made by New England Compound Center are now being recalled, that’s the company that’s being linked to the current national meningitis recall.
And on the list is Dakota Dune’s Bruening Eye Specialists.
For 5 years, Dr. Beth Bruening purchased the NECC manufactured Avastin eye injection for her patients.
That was, until November of last year due to pricing issues.
Bruening hasn’t administered the NECC product since last December and now uses this version from a different company.
She has a message for her patients.
Dr. Beth Bruening said, “They are not at risk because of this company’s particular product as we’ve not used this company for our medications since 2011.”
Also on the list is the Siouxland Surgery Center.
Doctors there purchased New England Compound Center’s Wydase injection, but took it off the shelf on October 3rd.
In a statement they say…
“Although this medication has not been associated with the current meningitis outbreak, the product was immediately pulled from inventory,” said Director of Nursing Gina Myers.
The actual culprit of the outbreak is fungal-contaminated spinal injections.
But that doesn’t mean all spinal injcetions are now unsafe.
“If you’re getting injections for back pain, you can continue to get those and you should,” said ABC’s Dr. Richard Besser.
The list of Iowa and Nebraska clinics should be released on Friday, but again, the FDA is recalling all products made by the company as a safety precaution.
