Movie night — Walnut Cove Public Library presents Teen Movie Night featuring a brand new Marvel comic movie. Watch Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. bring together a team of super humans to help save the Earth from Loki and his army. No admission charge. There will be bottled water for $1 and free popcorn. Balance class — A Matter of Balance class will start Oct. 18 at the King Senior Center. The class starts at 10 a.m. and lasts until noon. This is a weekly class and will meet for eight weeks. It is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. This is a nationally recognized program. This is a free health promotion class funded by a grant from the Area Agency on Aging and is an evidence based program. For more information call the King Senior Center at 983-0751.

Farmers market — The Stuart Farmers Market will be open Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. It’s apple season in Patrick County, so come out and find homegrown apples along with other produce. Lettuce, spinach, squash, beans, and potatoes also available with meat, eggs and baked items. SNAP accepted.
Sat., Oct. 20
Festival/5K — Coming back this year will be the Apple Dumpling Festival 5K on Oct. 20 at 8 a.m. Course will be in downtown Stuart and will benefit trail enhancement. Come run or walk the event and then stay for the 11th annual Apple Dumpling Festival. Cornshucking Frolic — The 21st annual cornshucking frolic will be held on Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Horne Creek Living Historical Farm. Bring a lawn chair so you can sit back and enjoy the music. $5 fee per adult; children 7-12 are $3 and children 6 and under get in free. The event will feature heritage demonstrations and activities, music at the visitor center and music and dancing at the Hauser farmhouse. No pets allowed. Food available throughout the day for a nominal fee. Cancelled in the event of rain.
10K Race — The annual Rural Hall Area Business Association Flat and Fast 10K will take place at 8 a.m. The charity run raises funds for Rural Hall Elementary School. To register, visit www.active.com and use “RHABA” as your search word.
Cruise-in — Fifth annual South Stokes Cruise-In will be held on Oct. 20 at Southeastern Middle School in Walnut Cove from 3 to 7 p.m. All vehicles welcome. Activities include DJ music, silent auction, 50/50 drawing, door prizes, bake sale and food. All proceeds go the South Stokes baseball program. Come out and support the Saura team.
Reunion — Lawsonville Class of 1944 will have their reunion on Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. at Duke’s Restaurant in Walnut Cove.

Dedication — Grove Stone Dedication for Pvt. James M. Nelson, Co. M 21st Regt. N.C.T. C.S.A., will be held at Clear Springs P.B.C. on Oct. 21 at 2:30 p.m.
Reunion — The late Jimmy and Huldie Bennett family reunion will be Oct. 21 at the Lawsonville Community building. A covered dish luncheon will begin at 1 p.m.

Workshop — KidSource Child Care Resource and Referral, a program of Stokes Partnership for Children, is offering training on “The Way to Parenting.” Melissa W. Hiatt, MPA, director of Stokes SCAN, and Robin Rosenbalm, Med., Home Based Family Counselor, Stokes SCAN, will be presenting from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Stokes Partnership. Is there a right way and a wrong way to raise children? To effectively support and guide parents down the path to raising independent, productive learners? Journey through the life of a parent and discover how to develop “the mindset,” a peaceful, efficient way of thinking and producing a happy home with children. This training is appropriate for parents/guardians, foster parents and teachers of young children. Pre-registration is required. There is a $7 fee for child care providers. Reunion — The Walter and Lola Bennett family reunion will be held Oct. 23 at the Lawsonville Community Building (lower level), next door to Lawsonville Elementary School. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish or two and enjoy the fellowship with family. All paper products and beverages will be provided for the day and lunch will be served promptly at 1 p.m.
Movie night — Walnut Cove Public Library presents Ladies Night at the movies. See a wonderful movie (starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum) about a car accident that puts Paige in a coma, and when she wakes up with severe memory loss, her husband Leo works to win her heart again. Bingo — His and Her Bingo night for BackPack Buddies will be held Oct. 26 at the American Legion in Sandy Ridge. Doors open at 6 p.m., games begin at 7 p.m. Twenty games for $20, cover-all game sold separately. Two cards for $5 paddle auction for men and women. Food and drinks available for purchase. Monster Smash — Danbury Public Library is having a Monster Smash from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Join others at the library for fun stories, monster crafts, and a movie. Enjoy a lunch of hot dogs and chips. Fall festival — The King Elementary Fall Festival will be held Oct. 27 from 4 to 8 p.m. Located at 152 East School St., King. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for school age children. Tickets are 25 cents. Games, food, bounce houses and car cruise-in. Fall festival is rain or shine but car cruise-in is shine only.
Music — The Patrick County Music Association will sponsor a show at the Rotary Building in Stuart, Va., on Oct. 27. Harvest sale — Northview Community Building will hold its annual Hot Dog Supper and Harvest Sale with food available at 5 p.m. and auction starting at 7 p.m. There will be homemade cakes, pies, breads, canned goods, and other miscellaneous items auctioned, with all proceeds going toward upkeep of the community building. The building is available to groups for rent and is located on Pleasant View Church Road in Danbury.

Reunion — All descendants of John Wesley and Nancy Margaret Frye Dodson, along with his second wife, Sarah Jane Lawrence Dodson, are asked to attend the annual reunion on Oct. 28 at the North View Community Building on Pleasant View Church Road, Danbury. Flu shots — The W.G. Halloween — The downtown Madison Merchants are once again hosting the 2012 Halloween Trick-or-Treat on Oct. 31 from 3 to 5 p.m. All participating merchants will have an orange pumpkin sign posted. Any merchant that does not have an orange pumpkin is not participating. The participating merchants are located on Academy, Market, Murphy and Decatur streets. This year please bring a canned food for the food bank. There will be food collection boxes at the gazebos.

Chamber banquet — The King Chamber of Commerce will hold its Annual Awards Banquet on Nov. 1 at 6:30 p.m. at Jefferson Church of Christ in Rural Hall. During the evening, Linda Lane of Linda Lane Realty, LLC, will be honored as the 2012 Business Leader of the Year. Carolyn Byerly, former City Council member, will be recognized as the Retired Community Leader of the Year, while Habitat for Humanity of Stokes County will be named the 2012 Winner of the Duke Energy Citizenship and Service Award. The Spirit of the Chamber Award, a new award this year, will be presented to Nationwide Insurance agent David L. May Jr. A Future Business Leader of each of the county’s high schools will also be recognized during the evening. Chicken stew — The Stokes County Arts Council will host the 2012 World Championship Chicken Stew Festival on Nov. 3 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at King Central Park, 302 Kirby Road, King. The inaugural celebration will include a chicken stew cooking contest, art demonstrations, craft vendors, and music/dance entertainment. Admission is free. Fun Day — Fun day at Germanton Park Classic Car and Truck Cruz-In will be held on Nov. 3 from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. rain or shine. Pies — Sandy Ridge Ruritans are now taking orders for Mrs. Pumpkin’s chicken pies or chicken pot pies. Chicken pies are made with boneless, skinless breast meat. They are $12 for one pie, 3 pies for $33 or 5 pies for $50. Pies are frozen and orders need to be placed by Oct. 25; pick-up date will be Nov. 1 at Sandy Ridge Community Center. Proceeds to benefit Back Pack Buddies Program.
Poetry contest — Local poets are welcome to send one poem of 21 lines or less to Poetry Idol Auditions, P.O. Box 3561, Ashland, Oregon 97520, or enter online at www.freecontest.com. The deadline for entering is Oct. 31. There are 50 prizes totaling $5,000, with a $1,000 grand prize for the last poet standing. Entries submitted may be written on any subject using any style, and the Contest Director Dr. Joseph Cameron will have the final say on judging the contest. Entrants should include their name and address on the same page as the poem, and a winners’ list will be sent to them. A winner’s list will also be posted online.
Fundraising campaign — Join the Walnut Cove Senior Center in its latest fundraising campaign. Sponsor a senior for one year by contributing $100 and your name or the name of your choice will be placed on the sponsor board at the Senior Center.
