Explaining Texas A&M’s “new” titles listed at Kyle Field

Texas AM’s updated list of championships on the northwest wall of Kyle Field has drawn lots of discussion the past two days because two new national titles (1919, 1927) were added. So were two titles under the list of conference championships from the Big 12 era (1997, 2010). In both of those seasons, the Aggies won or shared South Division titles but did not win the Big 12 championship.

Before today’s game against Flordia, AM associate athletic director of media relations Alan Cannon offered the following explanation:

The national titles were not from the wire services but are listed in the NCAA record books. (Note: multiple schools typically won national titles each year before 1936, the first year of the AP poll). Alabama, for example, claims 14 national championships. But only nine were won during the era of the college football polls.

In addition, Cannon said the list of conference titles from 1997 and 2010 were supposed to have the word “South” in conjunction with the year. But that word has yet to be posted on the signage, which was updated earlier this week. Cannon said plans are in place to add the word “South” to those years to designate them as divisional titles.
