Civil War Sesquicentennial Events for September Include Music, Exhibits

Lectures, exhibits and musical performances are among the events the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission is planning for September.

Events include:

  • The Arkansas Supreme Court and the Civil War, a program featuring historian Michael Dougan and archivist Russell Baker, will be held Friday (Sept. 7) at the Justice Building in Little Rock. The Arkansas History Commission’s traveling exhibit Fought in Earnest: The Civil War in Arkansas”will also be on disply at the Supreme Court Building in Little Rock Sept. 4-26. Call (501) 682-6879.
  • Civil War Arkansas 1861-1865, the ACWSC traveling exhibit, will be at Conway High School East through Sept. 9; call (501) 450-4860.
  • Historical Marker Dedications for ACWSC markers commemorating Searcy Landing in the Civil War and Brig. Gen. Dandridge McRae will be held in Searcy Sept. 8; e-mail sbakridge@gmail.com.
  • Scott Plantation Settlement in Scott will hold a day-long Civil War event Sept. 8; call (501) 227-7699.
  • The Soldier’s Song, a multi-media reader’s theater musical, will be held at the Old State House Museum in Little Rock Sept. 13; call (501) 324-9685.
  • The Civil War in Southwest Arkansas, a presentation by John W. Graves, will be held at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia Sept. 20; call (870) 230-5000.
  • Arkansas in the Civil War in 1862, a program with Ian Beard of the Old State House Museum, will be held Sept. 20 at the Bob Herzfeld Memorial Library in Benton; call (501) 778-4766.

  • Lew ‘Ben-Hur’ Wallace: A Reluctant Political General, a presentation by Chris Mortenson, will be held at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia Sept. 27; call (870) 230-5000.

  • Invasion or Liberation? The Civil War in Arkansas, an exhibit from the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, will be on display during September at the Arkansas Studies Institute in Little Rock; call (501) 320-5700.
  • The Civil War in Arkansas, an exhibit at Little Rock’s Historic Arkansas Museum featuring artifacts from its collection, will be on display during September; call (501) 324-9351.
