Ground Zero ceremonies on 9/11/11
This year marks the eleventh anniversary of 9/11, and events will be held in the area to pay tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Here are the events commemorating those lost on 9/11, listed below by region (Westchester, Rockland or Hudson Valley) and date.
WESTCHESTER
Sunday, Sept. 9:
Memorial plaque unveiled in Yonkers: The City of Yonkers will unveil a plaque that names 24 residents who died in the 9/11 attacks. The event is at 11 a.m. on the waterfront. Info: Water Grant Street, Yonkers; www.yonkersny.gov; free
Community Mosaic Mural Project in Port Chester: Make your mark on a 9/11-themed mural that will be permanently installed on the exterior wall of the Clay Art Center. Volunteers can create their own elements that will be part of a larger installation. Tuesday, Sept. 11:
Memorial in Mount Kisco: Join Mount Kisco’s volunteer fire department in remembering those lost at a monument built and unveiled last year. Memorial ceremony in Valhalla: Gather around The Rising, an 80-foot steel sculpture at Kensico Dam Plaza, to remember Westchester residents who died on 9/11. Dedication ceremony in Yonkers: Watch the dedication ceremony of a 38-foot steel beam from the World Trade Center. Ground Zero Independence Ride Blues Festival in Pomona: Honor 9/11 rescue workers with a police escorted motorcycle ride from Ground Zero to Krucker’s Grove where participants will enjoy a Blues Festival directly after. Headliners include Jace n’ Lee, The Dan Lawson Band and more.
