33000 new homes for a city ‘bulging at the seams’

DERBY has earmarked sites for 33,700 new homes and a link road between the A50 and A38 within the next 13 years to cope with its growing population.

Major housing developments have been listed for around the edge of the city boundary, particularly to the south at Findern, Stenson Fields, Chellaston, Shelton Lock and Boulton Moor.

The city council will now consult the public on its proposals, which it says are needed.

Hardyal Dhindsa, the city councillor responsible for planning, said: “Derby is bulging at the seams.”

He says there is a case for extending Derby’s boundary so that the city, rather than neighbouring South Derbyshire, benefits from the extra income from council tax which would result from the new homes.

He said: “That is something we would have to talk to our neighbouring authorities about and I could understand if they had some objections to that.”

The sites are included in the city’s draft core strategy, setting out development over the coming decades. It also introduces the potential for a new A50 junction near Barrow upon Trent or a road linking the A50 to the A38 near Findern.
