Gordon Lord Byron became the third Irish-trained winner at this year’s Ebor Festival as he quickened up smartly to land the Betfred City Of York Stakes on the Knavesmire.
Tom Hogan’s consistent four-year-old was sent off at 5-1 to claim his first victory since May and was ridden with plenty of confidence by in-form rider William Buick.
Bannock was the first to commit for home and he soon had many of his rivals struggling, but Gordon Lord Byron was produced on the far rail and finished off strongly to score by two and three-quarter lengths.
Buick, riding his third winner of the meeting, said: “It’s great to come to these big meetings and ride winners. He travelled really well and I was a little bit wider than I wanted to be, but he’s won very easily.”
