The slumping L.A. Angels, fighting for a wild card slot after being touted as one of the hottest teams coming into the season, seemed to catch a bit of a break in Boston.
After going 3-7 entering the three-game series, the Angels won the first two games before Thursday’s afternoon set.
Now they could be looking at some missed time for three-time MVP Albert Pujols, who was pulled from Wednesday night’s game in the fourth inning.
An MRI on Pujols’ right calf showed no structural damage, but is listed as day-to-day. He is not in the lineup tonight.
The first baseman, who came out with tightness in his right calf, injured his left calf in 2008 and missed 13 games while he served a stint on the disabled list.
Pujols, who was 2-for-2 with a double before coming out, said yesterday:
“I’m feeling sore right now. How I did it, I don’t know, I can’t tell you.”
He singled in his first at-bat, doubled in the fourth and scored on a single by Mark Trumbo. But he was holding his calf at third base and didn’t appear to be moving well at that point.
“While I was running from second to third that’s when I felt it the most,” Pujols said. “I ran fine on that double and then all of a sudden I can’t tell you, just one of those things. It was more when I was running from second to third, I kind of pulled up a little bit.”
Pujols, who got off to a slow start this season after signing a 10-year, $240-million deal with the Angels, is hitting .283 with 34 doubles, 28 home runs and 86 RBI in 121 games. He hasn’t missed a game because of injury so far this season.
Trumbo filled in for Pujols at first base Thursday.
