Kemper Systems helps restore historic listed fountain

A waterproofing specialist has helped restore an historic listed fountain to its former glory in time for a north west city’s celebrations.

The landmark fountain in Preston’s Miller Park was to be a feature in the city’s Guild event, which happens once every 20 years, but was plagued by leaks.

Warrington-based Kemper System was recruited to supply its Kemperol liquid resin for the project.

The fountain is now water-tight and should be leak-free for 25 years.

London’s ‘gherkin’ building and the Empire State Building in New York are among other  landmarks to be protected by Kemperol, which is more commonly used on roofs.

The work was carried out by Lancashire-based Castle Contractors.

Castle Contractors director Neil Atherton said: “The Kemperol range is ideal for waterproofing fountains as it can follow the exact contours of the fountain bowl with no joins.

“It is also UV-stable and has a service life of at least 25 years, ensuring a robust solution for a generation.

“We have effectively provided an invisible waterproof membrane which maintains the character of this listed feature.”

Kemper was also recruited to provide specialist membranes to camouflage some of the electrical cabling infrastructure near the Olympic Velodrome.

All new cabling has been installed underground but some access points at ground level are required for maintenance and repairs. They are hidden behind bomb-proof walls and camouflaged with greenery.
