The newest bridge across the river Wensum in Norwich has been short-listed in two categories at this year’s international structural engineering awards.
The eye-catching Jarrold Bridge links the St James Place business development to the car park beside the Adam and Eve pub.
It was designed to give the impression of a smooth uninterrupted arc in a shape of a J over the river below, to reflect its well-known namesake, and was constructed by utilising a mix of weathering steel and timber.
Entries to this year’s Institution of Structural Engineers’ awards saw nearly 100 projects submitted and close to 60 shortlisted in 11 categories. The Jarrold Bridge is up for awards in the categories of pedestrian bridge and small projects.
Structural awards judge and institution president John Nolan said: “The calibre of entries was outstanding, and it was an enormous privilege to be part of the judging panel. There were more entries this year than ever before and with such high quality across the board, selecting the shortlisted projects was extremely tough.”
The awards were launched in 1968 and the winners will be announced on November 2 in London.
As reported, Caroline Jarrold, community affairs advisor for Jarrold, said the idea for the bridge was conceived more than 20 years ago by former company chairman Peter Jarrold.
The bridge was opened for public use last December, but the official opening was held at the end of May.
The bridge, part of a £1.6m invest-ment by Jarrold, was created to improve pedestrian access to the city centre and station, as well as connec-ting the site to the city’s cycle routes.
The largest crane in the county was brought in to add the finishing touches to the bridge, which is the latest stage in the regeneration of the site off Barrack Street.
Further shortlisted entries – in different categories – include some constructions worldwide including the London 2012 Olympic Stadium, Titanic Belfast, Adidas Laces, Germany, and Al Hamra Firdous Tower, Kuwait.
