ULM names VAPA activities

The University of Louisiana at Monroe’s School of Visual and Performing Arts has announced the upcoming events for August and September. All events listed are open to the public.

VAPA welcomes Dr. Derle Long as the new director of the School of Visual and Performing Arts and Dr. Gary Ratcliff as the school’s new associate director.

AUGUST

Faculty exhibit

The ULM Art Faculty Exhibit showcasing creative research in various artistic disciplines will run Aug. 20 through Sept. 20 at Bry Gallery. Show times are Monday-Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday 7:30-11:30 a.m.

A reception will be 5-7 p.m. Aug. 30 in the gallery. The event is free and the public is invited.

Faculty concert

Alex Noppe, the Biedenharn Endowed Chair for ULM’s Department of Music, will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30 in the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall.

The recital is free and open to the public.

Joining Noppe will be Dr. Richard Seiler, professor for the Department of Music, on piano, and Dr. Sandra Lunte, professor for the Department of Music, on flute. This faculty artist concert will present a diverse set of pieces that feature a variety of interesting styles and instruments, including trumpet, flugelhorn, piccolo trumpet and cornet. The program will include solo works by Honegger, Bitsch, Boehme, Rachmaninoff, and Arban. In addition, performers will play one of the rarest of chamber music combinations, a piece for trumpet, flute, and piano: Jim Stephenson’s “Croatian Trio.”

Guest artist cpmcert

In conjunction with the ULM/N.E. Louisiana Celtic Festival Annual Concert, the Bua Traditional Irish Band will perform Sept. 6, as guest artists on campus. The concert will be held at the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. For tickets, visit www.buamusic.com. Tickets are $15.

Faculty Artist Concert

The Faculty Artist Concert Series returns Sept. 11 with a concert in Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Dr. Claire Vangelisti, soprano and vocal area coordinator, and Dr. Lisa Maxedon, Louisiana Tech University faculty soprano and head of vocal studies, will perform a joint vocal recital with collaborative pianist Dr. Richard Seiler. The program titled “Portraits of Faith, Hope, and Love” will feature works of Purcell, Handel, Mozart, Brahms, Wolf, Poulenc, Chausson, Laitman, Hoiby, and more. The concert is free and open to the public.
