Listed home roof appeal

HOUSEHOLDERS in Painswick are appealing for permission to roof their listed home with reconstituted stone slates.

The residents of Turnstone House in the village’s Greenhouse Lane were turned down by the Stroud District Council local planning authority when they applied to strip off their plain concrete tiles and recover the roof with the reconstituted ones.

The occupants, whose appeal is being dealt with by way of written representations by the Secretary of State, have said the character of their main house and outbuildings would be preserved by the new stone slates.

The replacement tiles would not diminish the historical significance of Turnstone House, which is Grade II-listed, they said.

But the council’s planning officials said the change wasn’t justified on “technical, architectural or aesthetic grounds”.

They refused consent and said: “The change of roof covering will entail alterations to the detailing of the daintier elements of the house, causing harm to the character and historic interest.”
