This week’s Top Five – RTHS fall sporting events to attend

Rantoul Township High School has five varsity fall sports teams — football, volleyball, golf, cross country and girls tennis.

Here’s a game or meet from each of those sports that are worth checking out in person. Events are listed chronologically.

1. Champaign County golf tournament — The RTHS/Paxton-Buckley-Loda co-op team will tee off in this event that will feature the likes of Champaign Centennial, Champaign Central, Urbana and many others, at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29, at Lake of the Woods in Mahomet. County bragging rights are on the line.

2. Olympia at RTHS football — With the recent struggles of the two programs, this game, which starts at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14,  is one Eagles’ fans should feel optimistic about winning. It’s also Hall of Fame Night where RTHS will induct three former athletic standouts into its Hall of Fame.

3. Peoria Notre Dame cross country invite — The Eagles will hit the course at Detweiller Park at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15. Last year’s event had 111 teams.

4. Girls tennis quadrangular — RTHS will host Decatur St. Teresa, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley and Watseka in a four-team tournament starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, at Wabash Park.

5. Bloomington Central Catholic at RTHS volleyball — The Raiders went a perfect 14-0 last year in the Corn Belt  Conference. Eagles would send a message with a win in home match that starts at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27.
