Why Nigeria should be de-listed from OIC now, by cleric

THE Presbyterian Church of Nigeria (PCN) has called on the Federal Government to institute treason case against those Nigerians that facilitated the registration of the country in the Organisation of Islamic Country (OIC). It alleged that the action led the country into the precarious security situation it has found itself.

According to the church, the panacea to the incessant killings in the country by the Boko Haram sect is the removal of Nigeria from the OIC.

Prelate and Moderator of the PCN, Most Rev. Emele Uka, who made the call while fielding questions from journalists during the 20th General Assembly of the church in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, said what is happening in the country today is a systematic violation of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which guarantees Nigerians freedom of worship, without compulsorily belonging to a particular religion.

Uka stressed that for the carnages to stop, Nigeria must be de-listed from the D8 Islamic countries of the OIC, lamenting that the executive, legislators and the judiciary are folding their arms while the constitution is being violated.

“The registration of Nigeria as Islamic country by the past leaders is unfortunate. In one of their meetings held in Egypt, the government identified itself by attending that meeting, thereby meaning that Nigeria is an Islamic country”.

The cleric said: “An Islamic country does not tolerate another religion and the problem now is because the head of Nigerian government is a Christian, they are saying for the carnage to stop, President Goodluck Jonathan must become a Muslim, because there is no way a Muslim country can be ruled by a Christian.

“For carnages to stop, Nigeria must de-list itself from D8 Islamic country of OIC. Nigeria must stand to be seen as a federal state. I challenge members of executive, Senate and House of Representatives on why they are not saying anything as the constitution of Nigeria is being violated.

“Those that made Nigeria to become a member of OIC should be charged for treason. It is when Nigeria is removed from being a member of the Islamic state that these killings will stop.”

According to Uka, the Presbyterian Church generally abhors corruption since all the preaching of the gospel is against it. “Why the hydra- headed monster has refused to die is because government seems to have legalised it. For not punishing those caught in the act, the country is indirectly legitimising corruption, particularly the judiciary. How come the judiciary in Nigeria set a criminal free and the same person was convicted in London?

“It is our inability to deal with corruption at the highest level that is legitimising corruption in this country. It is a judiciary problem because all the people that have stolen money are not punished. If they are being punished, the act of stealing money will reduce. Let us see what will happen on the fuel subsidy scam.”
