First puts best foot forward

Ladys First was all heart en route to a one-length success in the Listed British Stallion Studs Dick Hern EBF Fillies’ Stakes at Haydock.

Richard Fahey’s filly (13-2) made all the running, but looked a sitting duck when Moone’s My Name and subsequent runner-up Dank made their moves.

Barry McHugh’s mount responded with zeal when pressed, though, and was still full of running at the line.

Fahey said: “We just wanted to get a Listed win with her, so that’s done. I’m not sure what we’ll do with her now, though.

“At Ascot (in the Sandringham Handicap) she was drawn on the wrong side, so that was that, and today we decided to make it a gallop because we knew she would stay.”

Willbeme (5-2 favourite) won the Duke Of Lancaster’s Own Yeomanry Handicap, while Postscript (7-1) took top honours in the concluding Read Hayley At racinguk.com Every Friday Handicap.
