Homeowners Look to Cash In On 2013 US Open

With the 2013 US Open at Merion Golf Club now less than a year away, nearby residents are looking to cash in on the convenient locations of their homes.

Over 100 Ardmore, Merion and Wynnewood homes have already cropped up on Event Homes, a website where homeowners can rent their homes for major sporting events. Homes can be rented by the day or by the week.

The asking prices for local homes listed on Event Homes ranges from $250 per day—for a one bedroom located five miles from the course—to $10,000 per day.

Since the homes on Event Homes are owner-listed for free, they don’t necessarily reflect what a certain home might realistically rent for during the US Open, said Jamie Moss, a realtor with Prudential Fox and Roach in Bryn Mawr.

While some homeowners are clearly trying to get the highest price they can for their homes, Moss said the going price for an average home seems to be around $4,000 to $5,000 for a full week’s rental the week of the tournament. The price for larger homes is higher.

Moss recently listed a home for a client in Wynnewood who is looking to rent during the tournament, which will be held from June 10-16, 2013.

“A lot of the players come with family, and there are not really any great hotels near the golf course,” Moss explained. “I think people are trying to capitalize on the tournament being here and trying to make a week’s vacation [out of it].”

Some of the listings on Event Homes include:

  • A six-bedroom, five-bathroom Wynnewood home, listed at $10,000/day
  • A one-bedroom, one-bathroom condo located in Newtown Square (5 miles from course), listed at $250/day
  • A three-bedroom, two-bathroom Haverford home (.5 miles from course), asking $5,500/day
  • A five-bedroom with 3.5 bathrooms, located across the street from Haverford College (from which a shuttle will run), asking $6,000/day
  • A five-bedroom, three-bathroom home located in Havertown, listed for $900/day
