This week’s column is a kind of catch-all for some upcoming events that lend themselves to the summer season. For those who have been traveling the newly constructed Bushkill Falls Road, you can certainly enjoy the wonderful wildflowers that border the roadway and emphasize the glory of summer colors.
Along with color there are events that make summer summery. Two returning events and one new one will fill in dates on your schedule over the next few weeks. The first is the eighth annual Bushkill Blues Festival Sunday, Aug. 12, at Lehman Township Community Park.
The second is the fourth annual Bushkill Emergency Corps Golf Tournament held at Country Club of the Poconos Monday, Aug. 13.
And the third is a brand-new event, “Poconos Got Talent!,” sponsored by the new Bushkill Inn Conference Center (formerly Pocmont) at the Mount Laurel Performing Arts Center Saturday, Aug. 18, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
The Bushkill Blues Festival will feature two seasoned blues groups. The Merchants of Groove is a recently reunited group that during the late ’80s and early ’90s dominated the blues scene in northeastern Pennsylvania.
The group is composed of recognizable musicians such as Paul Lyon, Teddy Young, Sandy Beecher, Rob “Frog” Fenstermaker and Mike Basalyga. The band plays a variety of house-rockin’ blues, including originals and classics from such artists as Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, the Fabulous Thunderbirds and more. Visit them on Facebook at facebook.com/merchantsofgroove.
The second group is the SheilaMark Band, a Hammond organ-driven band fronted by singer Sheila Statton on vocals. Organist and accordionist Mark Hamza plays a modified Hammond B3 organ that allows him to play bass with his feet. The band plays a variety of blues, rock and zydeco music. More information is available at sheilamarkproductions.com.
The Bushkill Emergency Corps golf tournament will take place Monday, Aug. 13, and is open to players of all levels. Tee-off is at 8 a.m., and the tournament is a scramble format. The $85 fee includes continental breakfast, golf and a barbecue lunch. Plenty of prizes and other extras make the day a good one to get away from the rat race. More information and registration forms are available at bushkillemergencycorps.com.
“Poconos Got Talent!” debuts with a bang Aug. 18 at The Mount. It is billed as the largest talent competition in the Poconos and is sponsored by the newest “kid” in town — the Bushkill Inn Conference Center.
The competition will award first-, second- and third-place cash prizes of $500, $300 and $200, respectively.
The deadline for entries is Aug. 10. Entry forms are available on the venue’s website, mountlaurelpac.com. Entries can be picked up at the following locations: The Mount box office, Bleachers Sports Bar (Fernwood Resort), Sticks N Stones Bar Grill, Big A Steakhouse 7 Grill, with other locations listed on the website. Special ticket and entry prices are listed on the site, and more information is available by calling 570-588-2522.
The overall event is free, and everyone is invited cheer on his favorite act. Entrance fee for those competing is $15 (prepay), and all types of talent is welcome. Children 12 and under may have one parent accompany them backstage. (A reminder that only G-rated content is allowed.) A prestigious panel of three judges will select winners.
So mark your calendars — there is plenty of summer left, and so much fun to fill the days!
