Grade II listed buildings may bedemolished for new estate

UP to 700 homes, a primary school, a care home and shops could be built near Burton — at the expense of three listed buildings.

Miller Homes Limited also wants to build a new community centre, restaurant and pub, and create open space with a children’s play area and allotments, together with footpaths and cycle routes on land north of Burton Road, in Streethay, near Fradley.

The proposed development is on 136 acres of agricultural land, access to which would be from Burton Road.

There is a cluster of buildings within the eastern portion of the site, including the Grade II listed Streethay House Farm, a wooden bungalow, three prefabricated bungalows and a number of agricultural buildings used for poultry rearing and storage.

Three listed buildings — a brick barn with attached outbuilding and a brick office building associated with the farm — would be bulldozed.

The majority of the new homes would be two and three-storeys — a quarter of which would be ‘affordable’ housing.

When the plans were first revealed, the development consisted of 850 homes and a leisure centre, but this was changed after a public exhibition.

A ‘community hub’ would be provided which would contain the majority of the proposed social and retail facilities, including restaurants, pubs, offices, shops, residential and flexible space for community facilities.

A spokesman for Pegasus Planning Group, agents acting on behalf of the applicants, said: “This site is suitable for the development proposed within Lichfield district.

“The site is located within a sustainable location, close to a range of services and facilities and with good access to public transport modes.

“The services and facilities to be provided on site will benefit not only future residents but also the residents of the existing surrounding built up area of Streethay.

“There are also no unacceptable physical or environmental constraints that prevent the site being developed.

“The development has been designed to make to most efficient use of the site while at the same time providing a spacious and pleasant living environment with a high standard of design.”
