Olympic organisers have been forced to apologise for another gaffe after Welsh footballer Joe Allen was listed as English in the programme for Team GB’s first match against Senegal at Old Trafford.
The mistake comes less than 24 hours after the North Korean women’s footballers walked off the pitch after the South Korea flag was mistakenly displayed before their opening match with Colombia, delaying the kick-off by over an hour.
Allen is one of five Welsh players in Stuart Pearce’s 18-man squad for the Olympic Games.
The 22-year-old, who was born in Carmarthen, has played eight times for Wales and is considered one of the brightest young talents in the Premier League.
London 2012 spokesman Andy Mitchell told the BBC: “A genuine mistake was made for which we apologise.”
However, there may be more embarrassment to come for organisers with Ukraine’s foreign minister, Konstantin Grishchenko, complaining that there were similar mistakes in the official London 2012 biographies of Ukraine-born Russian athletes — with Ukraine listed as a region of Russia.
“I have just ordered our embassy in the UK to contact the Organising Committee to correct the mistakes,” he wrote on Twitter.
“The word region is a clumsy mistake even from the point of view of English grammar.”
