KENT—More details are coming together for the Kent Sidewalk Festival, scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 2, to Sunday, Aug. 5.
The family-oriented event features food, sales, music and special demonstrations and is sponsored by the Kent Chamber of Commerce, merchants and service organizations.
Some of the events slated for this year include a petting zoo at Three Monkeys and Me on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a family Sidewalk Chalk Art contest at the Kent Library from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, a demonstration of the dangers of even slow-speed crashes by the State Police’s “The Convincer” at Backcountry Outfitters on Saturday at 11 a.m., a weaving demonstration by Barbara Dull at Country Clothes on Saturday at 10 a.m., chair caning demonstrations by Karen Shaw of Rolling River Antiques on Friday and Saturday at 10 a.m., henna tattoos by Karen Stevens Saturday at 11a.m. at Terston for a $10 donation that goes to the Community Fund, fire truck rides Saturday by the Kent Volunteer Fire Department and hay rides on the Kent Green Sunday afternoon.
Doug Gouger will do crazy balloon creations at Annie Bananie Ice Cream Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The Kent Art Association will be open each of the four festival days from 1 to 5 p.m. Visitors will be able to purchase raffle tickets for a framed oil painting titled “Hills of Tuscany” by Paul Gould, valued at $750. The winning ticket will be drawn in December.
On Sunday at 1 p.m., artist, teacher and author Banjie Getsinger Nicholas will present an interactive silverpoint demonstration.
Kent’s restaurants will offer ethnic “street” food at affordable prices outside their doors. There will be wine tastings at Kent Wine Spirit. On Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., Backcountry Outfitters will feature “Cheeseburgers in Paradise” with free cheeseburgers and Jimmy Buffett music. Parrot head dress is encouraged.
This year’s BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair) concert in front of Richard Lindsey Booksellers will raise funds for The Fisher House Connecticut project; the construction of a facility near the Veteran’s Administration hospital in West Haven for relatives of recovering veterans to stay while visiting loved ones.
Local music groups, including students from the Litchfield Jazz Camp, Still: the Homegrown Band, Hummingbird (Bruce Osborne Co.), 6 Demon Bag, Andy and Jeannette Hicks, Dave Wonsey and The Joint Chiefs will provide music on Saturday and Sunday. Maria von Trapp and her children, courtesy of the TriArts Sharon Playhouse, will perform up and down North Main Street late Saturday morning.
Throughout the festival, local merchants will all feature special prices on their merchandise, many with tents outside to attract visitors.
North Main Street Marketplace (in front of Lyme Regis Ltd.) will sell antique, estate and vintage jewelry, antiques, collectibles, paintings, prints and more, and the Kent Memorial Library book sale will have extended hours Thursday and Friday from noon to 5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, each day during the festival that visitors purchase $10 or more, they will be eligible to win $25, $15 or $10 gift certificates for the book sale.
