City’s air quality index expected to soar for second day in a row

EDMONTON —  A second consecutive day of poor air quality is expected throughout the Edmonton region on Saturday due to a smokey haze produced from wildfires that continue to burn out of control in the northwest region of the province.

The province says there are nearly 30 fires in the Upper Hay region, 14 which are out of control. The biggest fire continues to be just outside Zama City in Mackenzie County that has singed 155,000 hectares since it was spawned by a lightning strike June 21.

As of 10 a.m. Saturday, the Air Quality Health Index was listed as moderate the capital region. It’s expected to reach eight, or high, on the 10-point rating scale later today.

Residents considered at risk, including seniors, children and people with health complications, are advised to reduce outdoor activities if they begin to experience symptoms.
