Received a brochure this past week listing events for the Marshall County Fair, which means one thing – the date for the fair is fast approaching. How about two weeks? The fair will be held July 22-28 at the fairgrounds in Moundsville.
Once again there will be daily sponors. These include: July 23 will be Pepsi Day; July 24 will be Senior Citizens and Veterans Day; July 25 will be Children’s Day; July 26 will be Chevron Day; June 27 will be Noble Energy Day; and July 28 will be Consol Energy Day.
On July 24 there will be free admission from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. for senior citizens and veterans, while on July 25, children 12 and under will be admitted free from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
There will be daily attractions July 23-28, being held at Heritage Hall, the Chesapeake Energy Exhibitor’s Hall and the 4-H and FFA Exhibition Hall. The hours for those activities will be 10 a.m. until 10 p.m.
Other daily events will be EZ Ride Bull Races, a Petting Zoo, High Flying Pages, Karaoke, Bingo (Sunday, Tuesday-Friday), Dueling Roadeo Bulls (Wednesday-Friday) and Antique Tractors, to name a few.
Of course, there will be carnival rides and games (Tuesday through Saturday); the fair admission ticket will cover carnival rides.
On July 23 there will be five pageants, the first at 3:30 p.m., when children 4-6 years old will compete for the titles of Junior King and Queen. That same day there will be a flag raising at 5:15 p.m., followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony, both to be held at the Festival Stage. Once the ribbon cutting ceremony is completed the first of four queen pageants will begin.
Among some of the other special events scheduled during Fair Week are:
A talent show at 8:30 p.m. on July 24 at the Festival Stage,
a Baby Tiny Tot Contest at 10 a.m. on July 25, and other children’s activities at 11 a.m. the same day. The Florida Georgia Line will be an attraction that evening at 9 p.m. at the Festival Stage.
There will be truck pulls beginning at 7 p.m. on July 26.
The Marshall County 4-H and FFA Livestock Auction will take place at 6 p.m. on July 27, and at 7 p.m. there will be tractor and truck pulls.
Country music performer Sammy Kershaw will appear on the Festival Stage at 9 p.m. on July 28. There will be reserved seating for this event.

This Wednesday from 7-10 p.m. there will be a free Family Fun Night at the Glen Dale Swimming Pool for all citizens of city and those who are pool pass holders.
In addition to swimming, those attending will be treated to hot dogs and hamburgers provided by the event sponsor, Reynolds Memorial Hospital.
There will also be drawings for a boy’s bicycle and a girl’s bicycle.
This is the first of two Family Fun Nights. The other will take place in August, sponsored by Dr. Mike Maroney.

At 2 p.m. Tuesday, the state Public Service Commission will be hold a hearing at the McMechen Community Building, adjacent to the fire department headquarters.
The hearing pertains to a water rate increase which the city of McMechen is seeking, involving the sale of water to Marshall County Public Service District No. 1. MCPSD No. 1 has protested the rate hike.
McMechen Mayor Mike Gracik is asking residents of the city to attend the hearing.

While on the subject of McMechen, city officials are looking forward to a Dollar General Store opening in the city.
Gracik said the firm has purchased a one-acre parcel on West Baltimore Street, and that soil testing has been done at the proposed site.

McMechen Councilman Charlie Pyle has resigned because of health problems, and applications for those interested in serving out the remaining two years of Pyle’s term will be accepted through July 18.
The new council member must be a registered voter who resides in the Second Ward.
Gracik said, “Charlie has worked hard for years on behalf of the city, and we will certainly miss him.”

The band “Streamline” will be making back-to-back appearances in Moundsville this week.
The band will be featured from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Music in the Park Summer Concert Series at Riverfront Park. Those attending are reminded to bring a lawn chair. The concession stand will be open at 6 p.m.
From 7-10 p.m. Saturday the band will play for a dance at St. Francis Xavier Hall, with proceeds to benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Marshall. Those attending are to bring a snack to share, with soft drinks to be provided. For reservations or information, call 304-845-4011.
