SAN ANGELO, Texas —
Amanda Jeffreys, the woman accused of stealing a pickup truck, leading police on a chase and crashing into the downtown police station Wednesday night, is in fair condition, an improvement from Thursday when she was listed as serious. Earlier Thursday she had been listed in critical condition.
The 24-year-old was taken to Shannon Medical Center after the crash with what police originally thought were minor injuries.
Police said the woman stole a pickup from a 7-Eleven across from El Patio Motel on Sherwood Way, led officers on a high-speed pursuit and crashed into the building at 401 E. Beauregard Ave. Jeffreys’ speed had reached close to 70 mph, police said.
Police Chief Tim Vasquez said Friday charges of felony mischief will be added to the other charges pending investigation.
Vasquez said the police station’s surveillance cameras had not caught the crash; however the nearby Municipal Court surveillance camera, which faces the station, shook violently and captured a pile of smoke.
The station is waiting on an appraiser and contractor to get the exact cost of damages and to see what needs to be replaced. Early estimates placed the damages at more than $100,000.
As of Friday, no new major damage had been discovered, but Vasquez said police have found more water damage and cracks in the station’s suspension pillars.
For now, temporary walls are in place where the vehicle crashed into the station.
