Busy, busy Open Week was one of the best ever

Open Week at Kilkenny golf club, which ran from Saturday, May 26 to Monday, June 4, was hugely successful and drew large numbers. Details and results of all events are listed below.

It was a very busy week for Ollie Cullen and his competition committee and the Pro shop ensured all entries and timesheets ran smoothly.

The men’s seniors competition in Open week was won by Tom Hickey (9), who was also celebrating his birthday on the day, with 41 points. Tom shot a 75 gross despite a lost ball on the 16th. Second was Tom’s brother, Pat (12) with the best of the 39s’, with Denis Carey (12), Kevin Donohue (21) and Liam McCormack (15) returning the same score. The gross was won by Dave deLoughrey with 29 gross points.

The ladies three person rumble on Tuesday, sponsored by the Ormonde Hotel, was won by a team from Borris, Breda Nolan (25), Margaret Collins (13) and Helen Jordan (19) with 81 points. They won on the count back from Mary Leahy Browne (4), Ann Smee (5) and Catherine Leahy (25).

Third were Liz Kinsella (12), Kay Gray (31) and Linda Donohue (20), Borris on 79 points.

Wednesday’s gents singles in Open Week produced great scoring. Some scores of 41 points failed to get among the prizes. The winners was Jamie Byrne (9) with a great 43 points. Jamie shot a 73 gross. He recorded birdies on the 2nd, 5th and 14th. He was out in one under 35 strokes for 23 points and added 20 on the back nine.

Second on 42 points went to John Meagher (9). John shot a 74 gross despite recording three sixes. He helped offset those with four birdies on the 1st, 8th,14th and 18th.

Neil Loy was third also on 42 points. Neil actually had 42 points after 17 holes but unfortunately blanked the 18th. The gross went to Eddie Power with 40 gross points. Eddie shot a 67 gross which included six birdies. His score has brought his handicap to +1.

The ladies 18 hole Stableford competition, sponsored by MacDonagh Junction, was won by Theresa Manning (18), Castlecomer with 40 points. Theresa turned with 17 points. She had a great back nine and added 23 points for a total of 40.

Theresa won on the count back from Mary Leahy Browne (4), who shot a great level par round of 73 for 40 points which included birdied on the 1st, 12th and 16th. The gross was won by Bridie McGarry (9) with 27 gross points.

Fridays three person team event was won by visitors Colin Dunne (7), Slievenamban, Ruairi O Heachaigh (18), Borris and Joe Tierney (15), Callan on 88 points. Second, also on 88 points, went to Pat Butler (7), Shay Quinn (14), Gowran Park and Steven Farrell (17).

The men’s 18 hole singles stableford on Saturday, sponsored by Newpark Hotel, was won by Liam McCormack (14) with 42 points. Liam was out in 19 points and covered the back nine in 37 strokes for 23 points and a total of 42.

Second on 41 points was Nock O’Donnell. Joe Gannon secured third place with the best of the 40s’. The gross was won by Richard Lawrence (4) with 34 points.

The men’s Open fourball on Sunday, sponsored by Hotel Kilkenny, was won with a great score of 47 points by Frank Byrne (16) and Neil Loy (11). Frank and Neil were only one over par better ball for the 18 holes.

Neil recorded birdies on the 4th and 5th. They had only three bogies on the 3rd, 6th and13th. Their playing partners were Jim White (5) and Ollie Hickey (16). They were also only one over for the 18 holes. They secured third place on 45 points.

Second went to Lar Ryan (5), Rathdowney and Owen Phelan with a better 45 points. They covered the 18 holes in three under par better ball.

The four person team event on Monday, sponsored by AIB bank, was won by Maurice Ryan (20), Martin Treacy (21), Jim Treacy (21) and S. McNamara (21), Templemore with 95 points. Second on 93 points were Tony Butler (12), Pat McEvoy (13), Joe O’Neill (17) and Margaret Butler (27).

The ladies and gents Open singles today (Wednesday) is from 8.30 to 6pm.

CAPTAIN’S PRIZE: The qualifying round for the Captain Seamus Rochford’s prize will be on Saturday and Sunday. The top 70 qualifiers or so will return for a second round on Saturday, June 16.

Senior ladies should take note that the senior mixed with the senior men will be on Thursday, June 14. Draw will be held that afternoon.

The CBS Classic played recently was won by Nicky Cashin (15), Joan Cashin (28) and Roger Cashin (16), Gold Coast with 86 points. Second on 85 points were Liam Cody (13), Pat Cody (15) and Peter Dabinet (20). Third on the same score were Seamus Rochford (12), Ben McGarry (13) and Niall O’Gorman (6).

DEADLINES: The following are the deadlines for completion of the current rounds on club match plays: men singles by June 25; men fourball by June 9; men’s foursomes by June 15 and mixed foursomes by June 16. The players on top of the draw are responsible for arranging the matches.

MEN’S INTER CLUB: The Barton Cup team beat Courtown 3½ to 1½ on Monday. Away in Courtown wins were achieved by Richard Duggan and Kevin Power and Conor Boland and Owen Sweeney.

In Kilkenny, Ronan Kelleher and Mark Power were victorious. The other pairings were Denis Brophy and Ciaran Colfer at home and Brendan Hogan and Harry Duggan in Courtown. The team plays Waterford in the next round.

The Barton Shield team head to Coolattin on Saturday for the area qualifier. The top four teams from the strokeplay qualifier on Saturday will return for match play semi-finals and final on Sunday.

The Provincial Towns Cup team will take on Bunclody on Saturday (4pm). There will be four matches in Kilkenny and five in Bunclody.

AON INSURANCE: Members who put their names on the AON insurance scheme application list are requested to drop the 20 euro fee into the office if they have not already done so.

ADOPT A GREEN: Work on repair of fairways and tees will recommence on Monday. Those involved should assemble at the clubhouse (7pm).

The Finn Trophy team scored a good win over Cill Dara in Kilkenny on Sunday. There were comfortable wins for Mary Leahy and Marian Woods, Birdie McGarry and Mary Norton and Phyl Doyle and Mags Cuddihy. The other pairings of Joan Cody and Liz Cleere and Ann Widger and Liz Kinsella were called in.

The competition for senior ladies will be at 10am on Thursday.

SENIOR MEN: Competition on Thursday at 11am.

SOCIAL GOLF: Social golf on Friday. Sign in at 6pm for 6.30 shotgun start. If there is any change in these times we will email members during the week.

JUNIOR/JUVENILE: There will be a three person team event in the club on Wednesday, June 13. The timesheet went live for online booking last week. This event is being held as a fund-raiser for the Juvenile Section.

Great work is on-going with the Saturday morning coaching sessions. The Juvenile Committees hope this event is supported to help defray costs involved in running the Juvenile Section. The entry fee is €6 for members and €15 for visitors.

The Monday morning juvenile competitions commences on Monday. Juvenile members have to book online this year. Any juvenile member who has not received their GUI card should call to the office. You need this card to register for online booking.

Juvenile coaching continues on Saturday, under-12s’ 10 to 11am and over 12s’ 11 to 12noon. Please be present at the clubhouse 15 minutes before scheduled start time.
