Pride events will close streets, reroute buses

Pittsburgh police and the Port Authority have released information about closures and detours that will be associated with this weekend’s Pittsburgh Pride 2012 events.

From police:

On Saturday, June 9th, 2012 beginning at 4:00AM, Liberty Avenue will be closed to all vehicular traffic between 9th Street and 10th Streets and Smithfield Street from Liberty to 7th for “Pride in the Street” featuring Melissa Etheridge and Mya. The hours for this event will be from 6:00PM – 1:30AM. The listed streets will close Saturday morning and remain closed through the events on June 10th, 2012 at 11:00PM.

On Sunday, June 10th, 2012 limited street closures will occur for the “Pride Awareness March” which will take place from 12:00 – 1:00PM. The parade route will include the following: Staging area will be on the Blvd. of the Allies between Grant and Wood. The route will begin at the Blvd. of the Allies, left onto Grant Street utilizing the outbound lanes, left onto Fifth Avenue, right onto Liberty Avenue and will end at Sixth and Liberty. The parade will go directly into the “Pridefest” event at 7th and Liberty which will take place from 1:00 – 6:30PM.

Signs for NO PARKING will be posted on Saturday, June 9th indicating parking restrictions after 7:00AM which will be in effect on Sunday, June 10th for the parade at the following locations:

Blvd. of the Allies (both sides) from Grant Street to Market Street, Fifth Avenue between Grant Street and Liberty Avenue and Liberty Avenue between Fifth and Seventh. Barricades will be erected in cross street areas as applicable and Officers will be posted at major intersections for the safety of the marchers as well as the citizens.

Numerous Port Authority bus routes will see detours and temporary stop changes in Downtown this weekend for this year’s Pittsburgh Pride events.

First, about 17 bus routes will detour briefly at midday Friday for a Pride kickoff event near Liberty Avenue and Ninth Street. Then all day Saturday, 17 bus routes will detour for the Pride in the Streets event and concert that will close a portion of Liberty Avenue.

Sunday will see multiple detours for the day-long PrideFest event and the Pride Awareness March around midday. Altogether about 40 Port Authority bus routes will be impacted that day.

Riders should allow for extra time when traveling on detoured routes. They should also be aware of minor schedule changes going into effect on about 18 routes starting Sunday.
