Tropical Storm Beryl cancels Clay events

ORANGE PARK — Clay County officials says all Memorial Day events have been cancelled due to Tropical Storm Beryl.

The storm is expected to bring 3 to 5 inches of rain and sustained winds of 40 mph with gusts as high as 50 mph beginning Sunday night and continuing into midday on Monday, the National Weather Service said.

Included in the cancellations was Sunday night’s Concert on the Green at Magnolia Point Golf and Country Club in Green Cove Springs. COG organizers said it was openly the second time in the event’s 25 year history that it was cancelled due to weather.

“This is a very, very sad day for us,” COG chairman Lauren Hoffman said in announcement listed on the group’s website Sunday afternoon. “The decision has been exceptionally difficult.”

The organization said all the food prepared for the concert, which annually features the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, would be donated to the Food Bank in Clay County.

The Memorial Day Riverfest in Green Cove Springs was also cancelled. Organizers also announced they had removed the Parade of Flags from Spring  Park ahead of the storm’s arrival on Sunday night.
