Memorial Day events planned across Central Illinois

Numerous ceremonies are planned this weekend to in recognition of the Memorial Day holiday.  Not all the events listed are on Monday.  

Bloomington-Normal: Parade lineup is at 8 a.m. Monday with the parade stepping off at 9 a.m. from Front and Madison streets in downtown Bloomington. The route heads west on Front to Lee Street, south on Lee to Wood Street, then west on Wood to Miller Park. Bandstand ceremony will include an address by Cleo Jordan, commander/CSO of Disabled American Veterans, McLean County Chapter 60. In case of rain, the ceremony will be at National Guard Armory, 1616 S. Main St.

At 1 p.m., VFW Post 454 meets at Danvers Cemetery at the grave of John Kruse. American Legion Post 635 meets at noon at Evergreen Cemetery, then at Randolph Cemetery. American Legion Post 56 meets 1 p.m. today at Park Hill Cemetery.

Atlanta: United Methodist Church men’s group breakfast is 7 to 9 a.m. Monday at the firehouse; a Boy Scout cake auction begins at 8 a.m.  The Atlanta Historic Commission’s history tour departs at 8:45 a.m. from the firehouse; veterans’ ceremony and Atlanta Band Concert begin at 10 a.m. on the library lawn. At 11:45 a.m., children can take a fire truck ride to the Atlanta Cemetery to place flags on veterans’ graves.  VFW Auxiliary 1756’s lunch will be 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the firehouse; Travis Morgan will serve lunch at Route 66 Park.

Danvers: Service, 1 p.m. Monday, Danvers Cemetery; sponsored by VFW Post 454.

Eureka: Parade steps off 10:30 a.m. Monday from the high school parking lot; line-up is at 10:20 a.m. Service begins at 11 a.m. at Olio Cemetery, with retired U.S. Navy Chief Eric H. Pigman speaking. Also planned are a 21-gun salute, taps, speakers and music.

Farmer City: American Legion family and VFW ceremony starts 10 a.m. Monday in Central Park; march to City Cemetery follows, with tribute at Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Patriots on Wheels judging and contest will follow at City Park. Wheels entrants (up to age 16) decorate their wheels and themselves in red, white and blue. No animal-drawn or motorized vehicles are allowed.

Heyworth: Ceremony at 2 p.m. today at Carl E. Miller American Legion Post 624, Heyworth. Speaker is LeRoy Police Chief Gordon Beck. Event co-sponsored by Little-Embry-Rainey Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1559.

LeRoy: Dinner 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at First United Presbyterian Church, LeRoy; fried chicken meal raises money for summer youth mission trip to Newport, Tenn.; $8 adults, $4 ages 6 to 12, free for children 5 and under..

Lincoln: Ceremony begins 10:30 a.m. Monday at American Legion Post 263, 1740 Fifth St.; lunch follows; balloon launch, 1 p.m.

Pontiac: Parade, sponsored by VFW Post 886, begins at 10:30 a.m. Monday downtown.

Saybrook: American Legion and Sons of the American Legion service starts 10:30 a.m. Monday at Riverside Cemetery, then Township Cemetery.

Streator:  Activities begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday with a wreath thrown into the Vermilion River at the Main Street Bridge to honor World War II veterans lost at sea. The Streator High School band will play the Navy hymn. Activities move to Veterans’ Plaza at City Park at 11 a.m. when the band will perform and Iraq war veteran J.T. Huey will give the main address.

Wapella: Observance begins 12:30 p.m. June 3 at Rucker Chapel with basket dinner in church basement; bring table service and a dish to pass. Program begins at 2 p.m. with speaker Caleb Douglass of St. Joseph and presentation by Amvets, American Legion and VFW. Military rites at 3 p.m. in Rucker Chapel Cemetery.

Waynesville: American Legion Post 1189 service begins at 10 a.m. Monday at Evergreen Cemetery, then at Union Cemetery, Rock Creek Cemetery and Fairview Cemetery. Legion dinner follows for veterans and their families.
