West TN honors vets this weekend

Ceremonies honoring veterans will be held all over West Tennessee this Memorial Day weekend, including services in Jackson and at Shiloh National Military Park.

All events listed below are free and open to the public.

• Shiloh National Military Park’s Memorial Day service will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at the Shiloh National Cemetery. The event will feature retired U.S. Army aviator Col. Roger Hill’s presentation of the Memorial Day Address. Memorial Day activities, including costumed interpreters who will present programs on the experiences of soldiers, will also be held from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today and Sunday at the Shiloh Battlefield Visitor Center. A live firing of different firearms will be performed each day at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

• Jackson’s Memorial Day celebration will be held at Hollywood Cemetery at 2 p.m. Sunday. The service will include a presentation of colors by veterans of VFW Post 1848 in Jackson and patriotic music presented by former Lambuth University choir director Carrie Prewitt. Lee Weimer will play the trumpet. Refreshments will be served.

• Henderson will host a Memorial Day program and service at Henderson’s City Hall from 8:30 a.m. to noon Monday. The program will be presented by the VFW.

• Medina’s Memorial Day Service is sponsored by the Medina Lions Club. It will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in front of Medina’s City Hall.

• Huntingdon’s Memorial Day service is at 10 a.m. Monday at Thomas Park. Capt. Emily Newman of the Air Force Reserves will be the guest speaker for the morning.

• Liberty All United Methodist Church, located about three miles from Huntingdon on the Old Stage Road, is having a Memorial Day program at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, with guest speaker Huntingdon Mayor Dale Kelley. Patriotic songs will be performed and flags will be placed on the grave of each veteran buried at the church. The program has been held annually since 1982.

• Bolivar’s Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. Monday at Bolivar’s court square.

• Milan’s American Legion Post 118 will have a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. Monday at Milan’s Cumberland Presbyterian Church, at 6083 S. First St., across from McDonald’s. Flags can be ordered to honor a veteran for $25. All proceeds from flags will be donated to the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Humboldt. To order a flag, call Thomas Darnell at (731) 686-9690.

• Jackson Meadow, an independent senior retirement community, welcomes the public to its free Memorial Day weekend events that will run through Monday. Events include an educational seminar about VA benefits available to veterans and surviving spouses at 10 a.m. today, an open house with refreshments at 10 a.m. Sunday and a Memorial Day celebration with dinner and entertainment at noon Monday.
