Memorial Day is Monday and events are planned throughout Snohomish County to honor those who died serving our country. On Memorial Day, U.S. flags that can be lowered should be flown at half staff until noon, then raised to full staff for the remainder of the day.

Arlington

n American Legion Post 76 plans to put up flags at 6 a.m. Monday at Arlington Cemetery, 20310 67th Ave. NE. A ceremony is set for 11 a.m. A breakfast is planned from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at American Legion Post 76, 115 N. Olympic Ave. and is free for volunteers who help put up flags. A parade is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on North Olympic Avenue.

Edmonds

n The Edmonds Cemetery and Columbarium Board plans its annual Memorial Day Observance for 11 a.m. Monday at the Edmonds Memorial Cemetery, located at 100th Avenue W. and 15th Street SW. American Sign Language translation will be provided. The event will take place rain or shine and is approximately an hour long. Street parking is available; parking within the cemetery is limited to those with handicap-parking permits only. Limited seating is available. Guests are encouraged to bring their own folding chairs. Refreshments, provided by the Lynnwood Emblem Club 366, will be served after the program. Taking part in the ceremony will be cemetery board member Dale Hoggins; U.S. Navy veteran Ervin Schmidt with Edmonds-Woodway High School senior Blaise Lamb; American Legion Post 66, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8870, Explorer Post 734, Girl Scout Troop 42093, Cub Pack 331 and the Washington National Guard; Mayor Dave Earling; Edmonds-Woodway senior Katarina Nguyen; and the Edmonds-Woodway Vocal Volunteers and brass quintet. Visitors are invited to stroll the cemetery grounds after the ceremony and take a self-guided tour using one of the cemetery’s walking maps.

Everett

n Breakfast will be served from 7 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Elks Lodge, 2802 Hoyt Ave. in Everett, with a $10 donation going to a food basket program.

n Snohomish County Central Memorial Committee offers its annual Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. at the Evergreen Cemetery Mausoleum, 4504 Broadway. The service honors Sen. Henry M. “Scoop” Jackson, who was born and died in Everett. The master of ceremonies is historian and author Larry O’Donnell. As part of the ceremony, a prayer by Chaplain Joe Chowzeng, Fleet Reserve Branch 170, is planned before a bag pipe solo by Paul Vagors of the Northwest Jr. Bag Pipe Band. Tom Gaskin, an Everett Community College instructor, and Cmdr. Doug Stephens of Naval Branch Medical Station, Naval Station Everett, are the guest speakers. Several Jr. ROTC units are also scheduled to be part of the event. A meatloaf lunch for $5 will follow from noon until 3 p.m. at the Fleet Reserve Branch 170, 6802 Beverly Blvd.

n Volunteers can meet at the Evergreen Cemetery Mausoleum at 9 a.m. today to help the Everett Elks put up flags. Girl Scout Troops 42996 and 40525 from the Mukilteo Service Unit plan to assist in preparing the grounds for the ceremony. The Girl Scouts plan to also help as needed on Memorial Day. Small American flags are also set to be placed on grave sites by Boy Scouts supervised by the Everett Emblem Club 523.

Lake Stevens

n Members of American Legion Post 181 along with the Women’s Auxiliary will be at several locations from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday to hand out red poppies and information about the holiday. Donations will be gladly accepted, and all money collected goes directly to veterans and veterans-related programs.

n At 10 a.m. Monday, a service is planned at the Lake Stevens War Memorial, 1808 24th Ave. NE. This event is scheduled to include the lowering all flags to half staff, a speaker, a reading of the names of those engraved on the memorial, and the playing of taps.

n A Memorial Day Service is scheduled at noon at the Machias Cemetery. This will include a 21-gun salute and the playing of taps. The cemetery is located about three miles south of Lake Stevens at 12th Street SE and 135th Avenue SE in Machias.

Lynnwood

n The city of Lynnwood will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. May 28 at Veterans Park, 19300 44th Ave. W. The ceremony will feature the Northwest Junior Pipe Band, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1040 and the American Legion Post 37, country recording artist Garret Lloyd King and guest speaker retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Joseph S. Jimenez. Boy Scouts Troop 49 also will take part, placing the flags in the park and distributing programs.

Marysville

n American Legion Post No. 178 of Marysville is planning to host its annual Memorial Day Service at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Marysville Cemetery. Each year, American Legion members and cemetery staff orchestrate a patriotic display of more than 230 veterans’ flags flying throughout the cemetery at 8801 State Ave. The Marysville Pilchuck High School Band, Marysville Pilchuck Navy Jr. ROTC Color Guard, speakers and presentations honoring American Veterans are all set to be part of the service. The public is invited to an open house and buffet luncheon at the American Legion Post Hall, Second Street and Cedar Avenue in Marysville following the service.

Monroe

n American Legion Post 58 and VFW Post 7511 will host service at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, 21714 Old Owen Road. The event is scheduled to include a guest speaker and the Snohomish High School Marine Corps Jr. ROTC rifle team.

Mukilteo

n The Mukilteo Historical Society is offering a Memorial Day Ceremony in Pioneer Cemetery, 513 Webster St, at 11 a.m. Monday. Following the ceremony, Kay Hogland-Scheller and the Mukilteo Storytellers are planning to host a reception and open house at the Hogland House, 917 Webster St.

Snohomish

n A ceremony is planned for 11 a.m. Monday at the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery, 8601 Riverview Road. The event is hosted by American Legion Post 96 with the Snohomish High School band, Marine Jr. ROTC and guest speaker Snohomish County Sheriff John Lovick. A rededication of the Snohomish Library War Memorial is also planned during the ceremony Stanwood

n Frank H. Hancock American Legion Post 92 plans to host an observance at 11 a.m. Monday at Anderson Cemetery, located on Old Pioneer Highway, south of Highway 532.A reception will follow at American Legion Post 92, 26921 88th Ave. NW.

Sultan

n A public ceremony on Memorial Day is set for 11 a.m. at the Sultan Cemetery, 32820 Cascade View Drive. Gold Bar VFW Post 9417 and Ladies Auxiliary plans to place American flags at the grave sites of departed veterans at the Sultan Cemetery before Memorial Day.
