This weekend will kick off summer with plenty of events in the area to honor our veterans on Memorial Day. Local events for Cecil, Muse, Canonsburg, and North Strabane are listed below as well as local closings for the holiday.

The Muse Fire Department Parade will be held on Memorial Day, starting at the staton, 186 Muse Bishop Rd., and ending about ¼-mile down in front of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. The parade kicks off a few minutes before 9 a.m. and is led by local Boy Scout troops. Speakers for the service include Jessie McNurlen, an Iraq war veteran, and Ben Coleman.  

A Memorial Service to honor all veterans will be held at the Cecil American Legion Post 793 located at 3323 Millers Run Rd., at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 28. Flowers will be presented to all branches of the military, as well as the Boy Scouts and local fire departments, at the monument outside in the parking lot. The service will be followed by a lunch at the Legion. Both are open to the public.

The American Legion Post 793 Honor Guard will also be traveling to local cemeteries to honor fallen veterans beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday.

The borough of Canonsburg will be commemorating the Memorial Day holiday with a schedule of events beginning with a Mothers of Democracy Program at 8:15 a.m. at Canonsburg Middle School. 

The annual Canonsburg Memorial Day Parade will kick off with a 21-gun salute to all veterans at the Canonsburg Borough Building at 8:55 a.m. The parade will be led by this year’s marshal, state Sen. Tim Solobay, and head down Pike Street from Greenside Avenue to Bluff Street. Following the parade, there will be a program at Oak Spring Cemetery with the main address given by the senator.  

The Canonsburg Town Park Pool opens this weekend with hours on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday from noon to 6 p.m. More information can be found on the borough website.

The 11^th Annual North Strabane Fire Department 5K Challenge will be the opening event at the new Municipal Park, 1929 Route 519 South, on Memorial Day. The race starts at 8:30 a.m. Monday, May 28, with registration opening at 7:30 a.m. Walk-ins are welcome.  

“We have 80 registrants already, which is 30 percent more pre-registered this year than previous years. We are hoping we double that with additional registrants on Monday,” said Chuck Ruslavage, race director.

Awards for age groups and cash prizes for the top three men and women will be presented after the race.

There’s also a Kids Fun Run for children ages 10 and under at the Municipal Park starting at 9:30 am. Refreshments will be available after the race and all proceeds benefit the North Strabane Fire Department.  Registration forms can be found on the North Strabane website.
