CHAMPAIGN — The American Legion Post 24 is sponsoring a Memorial Day service on Monday at 2 p.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery, 611 E. Pennsylvania Ave., C.

The invocation and benediction will be by the Rev. Chuck Carlson of First Presbyterian Church, Champaign, with the “address of the day” by Harl Ray, detachment commander of Illinois Sons of the American Legion.

The program will include Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address” by Josh Irvin, commander of Sons of the American Legion Squadron 24, and “General Logan’s Order” presented by Chuck Zelinsky, past commander of Post 24. The National Anthem and “God Bless America” will be sung with audience participation, the placing of the memorial wreaths, rifle salute, taps played and a salute to the colors will end the program. Refreshments will be held at Post 24, 705 Bloomington Road, C, following the service, 3 p.m.

AMVETS Post 3 of Champaign will also conduct a service on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Grandview Memorial Gardens, 4112 W. Bloomington Road, C.

Services conducted by Albert Parker American Legion Post 620 in Bement on Sunday: at four area cemeteries:

— Hammond Cemetery, at noon.

— Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Bement Township Cemetery, Bement, at 12:30 p.m.

— St. Joseph Cemetery, Ivesdale, at 1 p.m.

— St. Boniface Cemetery, Colfax, at 1:30 p.m.

Buckley

Services conducted by American Legion Byron A. Hickerson Post 432 of Buckley at three area cemeteries on Monday:

— Lisk Cemetery, rural Thawville, at 9:30 a.m.

— Ash Grove cemetery, rural Buckley, at 10 a.m., by the Legion’s honor guard.

— Woodland/St. John’s Cemetery, at 10:30 a.m., honoring the area’s deceased veterans.

Immediately following the 10:30 a.m. service, refreshments will be served by the American Legion Auxiliary of Buckley at the Legion post, 313 S. Walnut St., Buckley. In case of rain, the services will also be held at the Legion post.

Cerro Gordo

Services conducted by Cerro Gordo American Legion Post 117 Auxiliary Unit, Juniors, and Sons of the American Legion at 9 a.m. Monday, at the grave of the last deceased veteran of the seven cemeteries served, beginning at Ritchie, Peck, Cross, West Frantz, East Frantz, then LaPlace at 10:30 a.m. and Cerro Gordo at 11 a.m.

A potluck dinner for those involved in the ceremony will be at 11:30 a.m. at the Legion post.

Cisco

Services conducted by Cisco American Legion Post 118 on Monday at two cemeteries:

— Croninger Cemetery, Cisco, at 11 a.m.

— Friends Creek Cemetery, Argenta, at 11:30 a.m.

A community potluck will be held at noon at the Post.

Cissna Park

Village park. Service at 9 a.m. Monday, conducted by Cissna Park American Legion Post 527. Includes a message from the Rev. Tim Hawn of Trinity Lutheran Church, Cissna Park, and an appearance by the Legion’s drill team, taps played and a salute to the dead. Afterward, the American Legion Auxiliary will serve coffee and donuts at the Legion home, 124 S. Second St.

Danville

— Ceremony at World War I Monument, West Main and Gilbert streets at 9 a.m.; conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars.

— Curtis G. Redden gravesite at Springhill Cemetery at 8:30 a.m.; conducted by American Legion Post 210.

— Ceremony at Korean War Memorial on Hazel Street at 9:30 a.m., conducted by Korean War Veterans.

— Maj. Kenneth Bailey gravesite at Springhill at 9:30 a.m., conducted by Marine Corps League.

— Jewell White gravesite at Springhill at 9:30 a.m., conducted by VFW.

— Ceremony at Women’s Memorial along Hazel Street at 9:45 a.m., conducted by Korean War Veterans.

DeLand

Fisher

Services conducted by Fisher AMVETS Post 52 and Patriarchs Militant Independent Order Of Odd Fellows of Illinois at three area cemeteries on Monday:

— Willowbrook Cemetery, 1/8-mile south on U.S. 136 on County Road 600 E., southeast of Fisher. Participants are invited to gather at 12:45 p.m. for the first service at 1 p.m.

— Mount Hope Cemetery, west of Illinois 47, north of Foosland, at 2 p.m.

— Shiloh Church Cemetery, north of Mahomet, just west of Illinois 47 near the church, at 3 p.m.

Georgetown

Veterans Monument, Georgetown Cemetery. 11 a.m. Monday, hosted by Georgetown American Legion Post 203. The Rev. Farris of the Nazarene Church will speak, oratory and prayer, followed by music by Bethel Baptist Church Choir. taps played by Georgetown Young Citizen, Erin Thompson. The ladies of the Post Auxiliary will place their wreath at the monument. Patriotic songs near the end of the ceremony. Joe Readenour of Moweaqua will play bagpipes to end the services. Barbecue sandwiches and chips provided by the Post 203 Auxiliary at the Legion Hall Club Room.

Gibson City

— Drummer Township Cemetery, Gibson City. Parade kick off, 10 a.m. Monday in front of the former Moyer District Library building, then south on Sangamon Avenue and continues to the cemetery for services at Drummer Creek Veterans Memorial at 10:30 a.m. Ceremony features the GCMS High School Marching Falcons, Steve Anderson singing a musical selection and speaker, Denver Denney, a past state commander for the Legion.

— Following the ceremonies in Gibson City, the Legion will travel to Elliott Cemetery, Elliott, for the services there, around 11:30 a.m.

— In case of inclement weather, services will be at the American Legion post in Gibson City.

Loda

Pine Ridge Cemetery, north edge of Loda. Service, 10 a.m. Monday, conducted by Loda American Legion Post 503. Includes a dedication of deceased veterans, Post 503 color guard, Ron Dudley, commander of the Loda Legion post, will speak, honor roll read of all departed members of the military from Loda Township, and a bronze plaque will be dedicated by the Loda Township Board and Pine Ridge Cemetery Board in honor of Gen. Israel Newton Stiles, a Civil War veteran who is buried at the cemetery.

Ludlow

The Ludlow American Legion post services are set for 10 a.m. Monday at the Ludlow Community Center, followed by a ceremony at the rural Ludlow Cemetery.

Mahomet

Riverside Cemetery, Mahomet, Ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday, conducted by Mahomet American Legion Post 1015. Bring your own lawn chairs. Afterward, refreshments at the Post on Main Street.

Mansfield

Services will be conducted by Mansfield American Legion Post 650 on Sunday:

— Blue Ridge Cemetery (North Cemetery), at 1 p.m.

— Mansfield Blue Ridge Cemetery (South Cemetery), at 1:30 p.m.

Melvin

Melvin Cemetery, Melvin. Service at 10 a.m. Monday. Opening address by the Rev. Paula Wallace of Melvin United Methodist Church, music by Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley High School band, roll call of deceased veterans read by Larry Dueringer. Refreshments at Melvin Town Hall, Main Street, after the service. In the event of rain, the service will be at the town hall on Main Street.

Monticello

Soldiers Circle, Monticello Cemetery. Tribute at 10 a.m. Monday, conducted by Hamm-Burke American Legion Post 101 in Monticello. The Monticello Honor Guard will pay tribute to the deceased veterans of all wars. The community is invited to attend.

Onarga

Services are scheduled for Monday, in Danforth, Gilman and Onarga. The Iroquois West High School band will perform at each of the services.

— In Danforth at 8:30 a.m.

— Followed by the service at the cemetery on the south side of Gilman at 9:30 a.m.

— Onarga Cemetery, North Poplar Street, northeast corner of town, at 10:30 a.m. Speaker is expected to be state Sen. Shane Cultra, R-Onarga.

Paxton

Glen Cemetery, Paxton. Annual parade leaves Paxton-Buckley-Loda Eastlawn School, 341 E. Center St., for the cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Monday. Marching units will form behind the Paxton-Buckley-Loda High School’s marching band, starting at 10 a.m. at the school, Center Street. There will be a special float for veterans to ride. Service at 11 a.m. Monday, conducted by Paxton American Legion Prairie Post 150. Includes a musical tribute by PBL High School’s marching band.

Penfield, Gifford, Royal

Services conducted by Royal American Legion Post and the Sons of the American Legion:

— Kopmann Cemetery, rural Gifford, at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

— St. John’s Cemetery, Royal, immediately following the morning worship at St. John Lutheran Church, around 11 a.m. Sunday.

Philo

Philo American Legion Post 1171 will conduct services on Monday at the following locations and times:

— St. Mary’s Cemetery, Pesotum, at 9:30 a.m.

— St. Joseph Cemetery, Bongard, at 10 a.m.

— Calvary Cemetery, one mile east of Philo, at 10:30 a.m.

— Locust Grove Cemetery, Philo, at 11 a.m.

The veterans’ graves will be marked with flags. The rites will include reading of the names, a 21-gun salute and playing of the taps. A guest speaker will be at the 11 a.m. services.

Piper City

— Bandstand on Peoria Street, downtown. Service at 9 a.m. Monday; conducted by Piper City American Legion post. Speaker, the Rev. Richard Brunskill and the reading of the names of all departed veterans from Piper City and the surrounding area.

— Calvary Catholic Cemetery and Brenton Cemetery, near Piper City. Service immediately after the program at the bandstand. Speaker will be David Gibb, chaplain of the Legion post. Donna Kincade, president of the post’s Auxiliary, will read a list of departed veterans from Piper City and the surrounding area.

Rankin

Rankin Cemetery. 10:15 a.m. Monday, conducted by Cissna Park American Legion’s drill team.

Rantoul

— A service to dedicate Glenwood Park on West Grove Avenue in Rantoul to the memory of a local man who fell in the line of duty is set for 2 p.m. Monday.

The park will be dedicated in honor of Army Sgt. Christopher M. Rudzinski, who lost his life when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle while on patrol in October 2009 in Afghanistan.

The service is open to the public.

— Lincoln’s Challenge Academy will holds its annual laying of the wreaths program at 4 p.m. today at the LCA Memorial Monument, 205 Dodge Ave., Rantoul.

The laying of the wreaths will honor those staff and cadets who have died and honor those who have died defending the United States.

The Rev. Steven Byrd of St. Malachy Church will give the opening prayer. State Senate President John Cullerton will be the keynote speaker, and the Rev. Ray Winfrey of Crossroads Church will give the closing prayer. Rantoul VFW will provide a 21-gun salute as well as taps.

Roberts

Roberts Gym. Service at 9 a.m. Monday. Speaker will be the Rev. Rapp.

Rossville

Rossville Cemetery, Rossville. Service at 11 a.m. Monday, followed by a potluck lunch at the American Legion.

Savoy

Veterans’ Memorial, West Tomaras Avenue. Celebration at 11 a.m. Monday,hosted by Savoy American Legion Post 1492. Celebration includes the colors presented the Boy Scouts and ROTC color guards, with taps played on bugles. A wreath will be laid on the memorial.

Sibley

Mount Hope Cemetery, Sibley. Service at 11 a.m. Monday, conducted by the Martin H. Suntken American Legion Post 244 of Sibley. Featuring the Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley High School Band, as well as the Martin H. Suntken American Legion unit’s color guard. Service led by the Rev. Corrine Blissard.

Sidney

Mount Hope Cemetery, along County Road 2125 E, northeast of Sidney. Service at 10 a.m. Monday, hosted by Sidney American Legion Post 433. Pastor Mike Picklesimer will be the speaker.

Solomon

Rucker Chapel church and cemetery in Solomon, located in Wilson Township, DeWitt County. Annual Memorial Day observance, June 3.
