A 21-year-old carer has been short-listed for a prize at the Great British Care Awards.
Louise Grieves, from Edgware, is nominated in the Newcomer to Care category and has reached the final four from an industry of nearly half a million.
Louise was inspired to take up caring after seeing the difference a carer made to a loved one.
She said: “A family member had a carer in their last stages of life and I saw the difference it made to them. Also a close friend of mine had cancer and I supported him through that.”
She works for The Extra Mile Care Company and provides live-in care for Russ, who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis.
The 65-year-old said “Caring is much more than just a job. Louise has been absolutely brilliant and helped me retain my dignity – she deserves this praise. She’s very young but that doesn’t matter
she’s done very well and I’m sure will go on to do even better.”
Chris Tanner, operations manager at Extra Mile, praised the young carer’s achievements.
He said: “Her dedication, hard work and good nature has made a real difference to the lives to so many people and we are thrilled that this has been recognised. I have to be careful or she’ll take
my job next.”
The finals will be held at the Grosvenor Hotel on 23rd June and Louise admitted she is a little apprehensive “It’s a great achievement just to be nominated but I’m a bit nervous to be honest.”
