PEOPLE can purchase their own piece of Hastings jetty after it was listed for sale on eBay last week.
A Balnarring seller has listed eight pylons from the former jetty for sale. But the piece of history does not come cheaply – each pylon is listed at $500.
The seller advises loading and transport can be arranged, at the buyer’s cost.
Parks Victoria is repairing and updating the jetty and getting rid of the parts that cannot be incorporated into the new design.
Nick Elks, of Australian Reclaimed Timbers, said he had been approached by the contractors to take the pylons but turned them down.
“It’s completely rotten, the only thing it would be good for would be landscape gardening,” Mr Elks said. “I told him he could pay me $20,000 to get rid of it.”
Mr Elks, who has removed many piers in the past including at Frankston and Brighton, said it was a big job.
“We are not talking about a couple of planks of timber. With what it would cost me in wages to remove and sort through it, it wouldn’t be worth it,” he said.
Mr Elks estimated about 80 pylons had been removed from the former jetty.
A Parks Victoria spokeswoman said it was common practice to recycle any unused timber.
She said the remaining timbers became the property of contractors for use and recycling at their discretion.
“Our contractor has sold some of the running beams, crosshead and pylon timbers to recycling agents who will sell it themselves or mill it into outdoor furniture, landscaping uses, or other aged timber products for sale,” she said.
It is believed the contractor has on-sold the timber to someone who has listed it on eBay.
