The Great Granville Garage Sale is getting legs.

In only its third year, the event Saturday will not only feature residential garage sales throughout town delineated on a village map and under a tent at Opera House Park, it will also feature vendors on the North Main Street block, where the Granville Farmer’s Market will reappear in two weeks.

The event, put on by volunteers of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, encourages residents and vendors to sign up to have their location placed on a map that will be distributed to eager shoppers.

Adding to the excitement this weekend is another massive sale, a Tag Sale Thursday through Sunday at the Buxton Inn. The combined two sales could drew thousands to town on Saturday.

Buxton owner Orville Orr, who along with his wife is selling the Buxton Inn block, said there are “thousands” of items available, most of them antiques.

“Thousands. I’m not kidding,” Orr said Monday.

For the garage sale, vendors on North Main (and under the Opera House tent) will pay $30 per spot, the same fee charged farmer’s market salespeople, said Bruce West, of St. Luke’s. The cost for individual households to get on the map is $10.

Westall said the North Main location allows more sellers to participate.

“It gives people from outside the village an opportunity, because the garage sale is restricted to the village,” he said. “I think it’s going to be one of those things, people will see it this year and thought they should have done that (too).”

“We seem to have quite a variety, everything from Kiwanis selling circus tickets to antiques and artwork, jewelry and of course a full array of household items,” said Marsha Hanes of St. Luke’s, a member of the garage sale committee.

Westall has visions of that spot during the garage sale becoming as popular as the farmer’s market. Quoting market master Larry Strayer, Westall said, “He doesn’t look for anybody anymore. People come to him.”

All proceeds from the event go to the Licking County Coalition for Housing, the nonprofit organization with the goal of serving the housing needs of homeless, low- and moderate-income residents in the area.
