Brighton schools announce May events – Brighton

Brighton schools have announced upcoming May events.

At 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, meet the candidates for the Brighton Board of Education at Candidates’ Night. The Brighton PTSA presents the event held in the board conference room of the Administration Building, located at 2035 Monroe Avenue. Candidates Martha Sciremammano, Mark Kokanovich and Rigel Goheen will be listed on the ballots May 15 during the school budget vote. Two candidates will be selected from the three that are running.

At noon May 3, the Brighton High School Community Reading Project will end with a luncheon in the gymnasium. More than 100 students, staff and community members will meet each other face-to-face after having shared reading journals since February. Participants read Erich Maria Remarque’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” as a group, sharing thoughts about their reading.

At 7:30 p.m. May 10, the PTSA Life Membership award will be given at an official ceremony in the school’s Media Center. Recipients receive a pin and presentation card honoring their service and commitment to children’s welfare. Nominees do not need to be PTSA members to receive the honor. The event is free and open to the public.

From 4:30-7:30 p.m. May 15, the school will host the annual Al Lewis Scholarship Spaghetti Supper in the cafeteria. Tickets are $7 for adults or $5 for children, with take-out orders available. The dinner is a fundraiser for the Al Lewis Scholarship, which is awarded to a graduating senior at Brighton High School.

Also from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. May 15, residents of the Brighton Central School District will vote on the school’s budget. The proposed budget authorizes $65,866,693 in spending for the 2012-2013 school year, which will result in a 2.4 percent increase in property taxes. Voters will also elect two members to the board of education from the three candidates running. Two propositions will also be on the ballot. Proposition 1 will authorize a withdrawal of $1.4 million from the Capital Reserve Fund for improvements to the main entrance of the administration building, lower gym floor replacement at Brighton High School and window replacement at French Road Elementary. Proposition 2 authorizes a transfer of $425,000 from the Capital Reserve Fund for computer equipment and software.

Voters must be at least 18 years old, U.S. citizens and residents of the Brighton Central School District at least 30 days prior to voting day. Voters should bring proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or another form of identification.

Brighton High School is located at 1150 S. Winton Road.
