REDEVELOPMENT: Woodlands House in Malpas
A NEWPORT “eyesore” will be redeveloped and new homes built on its land, it was decided yesterday.
Controversial plans to knock down extensions on the Grade II listed Woodlands House, in Woodlands Drive, Malpas, worried members of conservation group Save Britain’s Heritage, who said it would
harm the building.
They claimed the work would result in a “great change” harming the house, which they believe is a rare survivor of its type in the city.
But members Newport council’s planning committee agreed the proposals put forward by Rydale Court Properties Ltd would preserve part of the dilapidated building.
Members heard the rundown 19th century gentry house, which currently houses eight flats, was in a “shocking state” with only one remaining resident.
Planners admitted the scheme would “adversely impact” on the architectural and historic interest and setting of the listed building, but said the proposals were justified because of the long the
desire to bring it back to into full use.
Sitting Malpas councillor, Bill Langsford, said the “eyesore” had blighted the community for many years.
He said: “It’s like a carbuncle on the side of your face and I would say it’s the worst house in the village of Malpas and it needs bringing up.”
Pill councillor Ron Jones said its redevelopment was a long time coming, while sitting Rogerstone councillor Val Dudley said that while it was probably very nice in its early days, those days had
passed.
The proposals were unanimously passed by the committee.
This will see the extensions demolished, the creation of six new flats and seven four-bedroom homes built within its grounds.

About time – it’s a shame, but the place is a disgrace!
