HEDGESVILLE – One of the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia’s most popular events, Pickin’ in the Panhandle: The West Virginia State BBQ Bluegrass Festival, has been listed as one of the “Top 20 Places to Be in 2012” by Go WV, a premier publication of the group travel industry.
“It’s an honor to be included on this list, among some of West Virginia’s longest running fairs, festivals and events,” said Andrea Ball, executive director of the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Convention Visitors Bureau (MBCCVB) and director of Pickin’ in the Panhandle. “As we celebrate our sixth festival, we have many successes to reflect upon. Our first festival was a one-day event featuring six bands. Today, it’s a three-day extravaganza hosting 31 bands and the West Virginia State BBQ Championship. In just a few short years, this event has drawn over 10,000 people to the area.”
In addition to the tourist traffic that Pickin’ provides, the event is a substantial revenue generator for area businesses. The MBCCVB has developed “Pick Play” packages, available through many area lodging facilities, where Pickin’ attendees can enjoy special rates on accommodations and receive complimentary tickets with their stay. Ed and Kat Cimaglio, who own and operate the Cider Mill House Bed and Breakfast, look forward to the event each year.
“For the fifth year in a row, our bed and breakfast is already sold out the weekend after Labor Day to folks who are coming for Pickin’ this September,” Ed Cimaglio said. “It’s been great for our business, and created repeat visitors to our inn and to Berkeley County.”
The 2012 festival is set for Sept. 7 through 9 at the Lazy A Campground and will feature 31 bluegrass, country and Americana bands on three stages; the KCBS West Virginia State BBQ Championship; a backyard BBQ cook-off; a bluegrass band competition; a Kids Korner; arts and crafts; a beer garden; and more.
